I've seen a lot of pipe makers lately attaching magnetic pipe stems. Does anyone here own one? Are there any downsides? Seems like a cool idea. ?

I have two on the way from Josh Ronish at Dragon Briars. Anyone wondering can find videos on his instagram page. High powered magnet connection between stem and shank rather than a mortise/tenon setup. The pipes are also cool because the magnets make the pipe magnetic in general. If you need to set it down you can just slap it up on the side of a tool chest if you so choose.
In addition, the lack of a tenon allows one to remove the stem from the pipe while smoking if you should need to, without risking any kind of damage or deformity to the stem.

Don't know yet, he is in the process of making mine. Although according to him, and a few people who have bought them so far, there are no issues. The magnets are quite strong, they will grab the stem from a half inch away and suck it on like WHAP!

I would think they might work. One caution, when high powered magnets are allowed to strike together with much force, they can chip or crack which could be a problem down the road as well as an eye injury hazard. A super thin cork washer, like you might find in a brass instrument valve, would probably mitigate a lot of that issue.

Doing away with the mortise-tenon opens up the design possibilities. Viktor's shank/stem interfaces are all kinds of asymmetrical. I wish I can afford a Yashtylov. I'd also like to see if getting rid of the mortise-tenon joint improves the smoke.
I've seen them for a few years now. Seems like too much distance between stem contact and the draft hole would cause gurgle.
No matter the innovation, smoking a tobacco pipe in the 21st century automatically makes the practice an anachronism.
Do these magnets also have healing properties, or do I need to insist on crystal inlays for my next commissioned pipe?

I've got one with an entire mortise made of lapis lazuli, no beneficial effects noted.
