I just use a BIC EZ lighter, they work perfectly fine for me. They're reliable, and cheap so when one runs out of gas or gets misplaced no big deal. I tried using matches but always found them frustrating since I only smoke outside. I don't see myself ever buying a proper pipe lighter, I'd much rather use that money on a new pipe or tins.

On the topic of what to use for lighting one's pipe, I am reading a book at the present about a mountain climbing effort during the early 1920's, whose purpose is to scale Mt. Everest. The climbing team leader is a pipe smoker and the rest of the team said that they can determine just how windy the upcoming section of the mountain is based on how many matches it takes the leader to light his pipe.
Can you imagine trying to light a pipe with matches, while on the side of a mountain??

Oh, and I use an Old boy or matches when the air is nice and still.......

I was trying to find a working Nimrod Sportsman at a decent price and wasn’t having a lot of luck. I picked up this replica on Amazon and I’m very happy with it. It’s a simple mechanism like other fuel lighters but it holds fluid for a long time. Unlike an Zippo that evaporates out in a week, this is going on three weeks and still lighting. I’ll continue looking for a vintage one.

I would also say that a traditional BIC can and does a fine job….. and you do not have to worry about burning your thumb…. if you hold the lighter pointing downward IF you have your thumb on the trigger and have it positioned BELOW the flame, not above. It just involves a slightly different way of holding the BIC.

I kept trying to ignite my thumb before figuring this out !

Djeep lighter when I’m reading (only one hand available) and matches when not. I prefer matches but I read much.

I find lighters more reliable if I don't know how easily a blend lights and stays lit. Some blends I have to hold a light to it long enough and use so many relights that a lighter I found to be more useful.

I like the ones with a button to press to light them far more than the zippo lighters where I scrape my thumb on the metal lighting wheel.
