I have never had a puff of anything ever.

It's the sort of traditional hobby that appeals to me but at the moment actually starting is a step too far for me.

I feel a bit of an imposter being here on this site but everyone has been very welcoming.
Have you considered fly fishing? That's pretty traditional. More gear is required than with pipe smoking though.

My eyes sometimes make me wanna quit. They get very irritated everytime I smoke. But for me pipes are central to my enjoyment of the day. Beyond books, some cinema, etc I don't have much else to look forward to hobby wise. Unfortunately since it's so hard to keep smoke out of your eye with a pipe I've been smoking alot of cigs...

I guess that's me.

Reasons for not starting are:
Can't really afford it.
All my family are non smokers and I don't want to disappoint them.
Don't want my own children to start.
Little time to myself.
I'm in good health, not sure I want to risk that.

I know there are valid counter arguements to each of the above, many of which I am aware of.

I think I like to research things to the nth degree before making a decision.

Eg I spent ages looking at fountain pens before buying a Jinhao X750 for £2.
Smoking a pipe once a week or something will not jeopardize your health imo. Just don't start chain smoking cigs like indo when I've had a drink or two

I stopped smoking a pipe last year after COVID since I could barely taste anything. My taste is back and I’m smoking a few bowls a week again.

Over my life, I’ve smoked cigars for some periods and then a pipe for others. I remember in the 80’s it was Captain Black. I never smoked more than once in the evening but I even got tired of that many cigars after a while. I now smoke maybe a cigar a week in the summer but mostly a pipe.

I smoked a pipe after college and then quit to race Cyclocross for years and never picked up the pipe. ... I still have a dozen or so bikes in the basement that look funny at me when I poke my head in there...
Cycling and pipe smoking are surprisingly similar. The formula to determine how many bikes you have is "n+1" where n represents the number of bikes you currently have. I've found that formula perfectly plugs into my pipe collection.

I quit smoking pipe for about 21 years after having smoked pipe for 30 years. It was around 2000 when they stopped importing Capstan Blue Flake. Capstan had been my go-tobacco for about 20 years and when they stopped importing it I stopped smoking my pipes. I kept most of my pipes but did sell a few, mostly the Cammettos which I did not find smoked Virginia flake very well for me.

My wife is not too keen on smoking since both of her parents were heavy cigarette smokers and both passed away from lung cancer. I was fine not smoking my pipes although I did look at my stash of old tinned tobaccos from time to time and would have liked to have smoked a bowl or two.

Late last year my wife was diagnosed with liver cancer as a result from metastasized breast cancer. I am her caregiver since we are both retired. In January a package came for her and she handed it to me and said that's for you. In the package was a tin of Capstan Blue Flake. She said that she knew my pipes relaxed me and that I was under a lot of stress taking care of her. That's how I started smoking again.
In the 1980s and early 1990s I managed a small chain of pipe shops andattended the annual RTDA shows to purchase merchandise for the shops. Since starting smoking pipes again I have been amazed at the variety of tobaccos that are available compared to what was available in the 1980s and 1990s! I have become quite fond of Cornell and Dietz Bayou Morning Pipe, both in the tin and the bulk. It is almost replaced Capstan as my daily tobacco.

One interesting Health observation I can make about smoking a pipe is that it actually reduces my blood pressure, which is not high anyway. During the 1980s I had a series of Orthopedic surgeries at the VA Hospital in Portland Oregon. In those days they still had smoking and non-smoking wards. The nurse came around every couple of hours and took everyone's blood pressure. One time I was smoking my pipe and she said, "Oh your blood pressure is going to be high because you're smoking." She was very surprised when it was not high. So she kept track of my blood pressure every time she took it and whether or not I was smoking. My blood pressure was consistently lower if I was smoking my pipe when she came by to take the blood pressure readings.
I'm sure that doesn't hold true for everyone, but I find pipe smoking to be very relaxing.

I smoked a pipe after college and then quit to race Cyclocross for years and never picked up the pipe. Not a problem for me... I just stopped! Now I very much enjoy a pipe on the porch whenever I can carve out an hour or so... I still have a dozen or so bikes in the basement that look funny at me when I poke my head in there...
Get back on them! I’m still fantasizing that one day I will go on a long gravel ride, stop by a stream, eat a sandwich, smoke a pipe, enjoy, then ride on. Hasn’t happened yet! Sorry to distract, but if you raced cyclocross, you’ll be amazed at what modern gravel bikes will do.

Just got off a fat bike after riding all day and I’m about to pile up in a chair by a campfire, belly full of pork, and have some 40th.

I quite a few years ago because of difficult-to-explain compulsivity and impulsivity. It was a time when I needed to change everything and it might have been for the best. Unfortunately, I sold beautiful expensive pipes I bought back when I THOUGHT I had money to burn. after starting a family and feeling a bit of stress from everything it suddenly hit me how much I missed pipes. But I’ve also been realizing that I probably never smoked pipes “correctly.” That’s a touchy thing to say or way to put it I know. I’ve started over and it’s very different but probably a better experience now. I only feel a bit guilty about the smell that my family has to put up with (I smoke in my small office in our small house - I’m trying my best to improve ventilation). I guess that all this has nothing to do with the OP but it seemed like an opportunity to get this off my chest because I’ve been thinking about it anyway. I’d like to expound more somewhere about the “smoking pipes correctly” thing. Actually, while I’m sure there’s no one correct way to smoke, there are definitely bad ways to do it. At least it seems so.

Congratulations for recognizing these things and making the moves needed to do what’s best for the family. Not always easy to discuss, especially in a public setting. Kudos.

I quit at one point due to frustration. I actually started out having a pretty good experience, and something changed for some reason still unknown to me. All of a sudden I was experiencing a severely scorched tongue each and every time I tried to enjoy a pipe, regardless of my pipe/tobacco choice. I gave it up for quite a while and came back to it, and remembered how much I enjoyed it.
It's still not a frequent thing for me, but when I have the time to have a pipe, I enjoy it immensely.
