I have a young 32yo coworker who quit pipe smoking. He's been smoking anything and everything since he was 18 and just realized he is having a hard time breathing during his workouts. He's trying to get healthy again and then may come back to the pipe.
Mullein capsules expedite the cleansing of the lungs upon quitting. You may want to suggest this to your coworker. It breaks up tar and you expectorate it. Paired with cardio it works even faster

In all seriousness I wouldn’t criticize any living soul for giving up the pipe, drinking, social activity, hobby or anything else if their health requires it. Can’t enjoy anything when you’re dead. Your health comes first - unless of course you are actively trying to show yourself out the door. If you have any concerns I hope you talk with your doctors asap!

I believe at least one member, if not more, abstain from smoking for a variety of reasons. And a new member hadn't even started. I will let them speak for themselves.

Regardless, when I was younger, I seemed to be looking for my own coffin. Age and experience tend to change perspectives.

Especially with the birth of my daughter, I'm trying to stay on this side of the ground. Now if I can get past 58, I'll be further along in life than my father and his father.

If I had to stop smoking, I would (although me smoking may save the lives of others). However, I would keep a few pipes and some tobacco around just in case (or for the last ride). It just seems to make sense instead of starting over.

Never fold your hand, you don't know what cards you'll get dealt next. And remove just one card from the deck and the entire house falls as well.

Best wishes and strength for whatever you are (or anyone else is) going through.

If your throat got irritated just stop smoking for a while or cut down just to see whats happening...Sometimes if I oversmoke i start not to taste tobacco differences at all so I quit for a while..and one day I just start again...I do not smoke during the hot and humid summers -my body just tells me not to smoke...sometimes I smoke 1 or 3 bowls a day or some days none...It all depends..I smoke for pleasure and I am not addicted to it so much that I have to smoke every day;;I even quit for years in the past just because I could..But smoking since 1987 off and on Just pipes and cigars very ocasionally.if you just started smoking pipes last year I would be no worry about health problems related from it...

I quit smoking in the early 1980's. I remember it well, I was leaving the Disney lot one day in 1983 and as I walked out past the security gate I pulled out the last cigarette in the pack, and tossed the pack in the trash. Finished that cigarette walking to my car, and decided not to buy another cigarette until I felt I really wanted one. Haven't had another coffin nail since that day in 1983, and I was a 1 to 2 pack a day smoker. As part of that I stopped smoking my pipes. It was about 6 years before I picked up pipes and cigars again. Kind of got tired of cigars (it would be hard to match the quality of a Flor de Cano Epicure) and don't smoke them either. I enjoy my pipes, but have cut way back on how much I smoke, mostly 1 to 3 bowls a day, sometimes no bowls at all for weeks at a time.

Suddenly my throat is irritated after a year and a half of smoking just wondering if it might be pipe related or it's unrelated. I love smoking so much and invested quite a bit in it too. I would hate to have to give up so soon after discovering it lol.
Currently going through something similar. I’ve been sick since may with throat issues, taking antibiotics like candy. The last time I was sick I had two anaerobic bacteria’s and strep c, not sure if that’s what I’ve had the whole time or why it took so long to figure out. Just had my tonsils removed and planning on smoking after one whole month abstaining. I really hope none of its smoking related. I’m in the same boat, a lot of money invested and I truly love the hobby. I hope your throat issues clear up and it’s totally unrelated to smoking!

One friend quit when his favorite blend was discontinued and switched to cigars.
Another friend quit after being diagnosed with cancer in the mouth.
I quit after my University banned tobacco, but kept a few old briars and a tin of MacBaren's Latakia Blend.
After I was down-sized and hung up my tweeds for the last time, I picked up my briars again.
When an infant comes into the world, I'll fire a celebratory bowl in honor of mother and child.

I chewed tobacco for 25 years and so I know addiction. I am not addicted to pipe tobacco and often I don't even remember I can. So, it is important to recognize the difference.

Habits and associations are things that can be good or bad. If you're used to having a beer first thing after the morning coffee and you want to change, you force yourself not to do it. Over time. the habits will change. Same if you want to walk every morning, you do it rain or shine and soon it will be a habit.

For me, doing something I really don't think is good or something I want to do that is good and never making the decision to stop is the conflict I have dealt with many times. Stopping or starting has never been that hard. It is only a perceived mental difficulty.

I had a neighbor who was heavy smoker, big cuban cigars which he brought home from Moskow where he was working on construction plant ,also he had beautiful pipes on the rack , smoked both those cigars and pipes with Clan Aromatic ,then suddenly when he reached his 60ies he stopped cold turkey'I was living other place then, sadly enough I did not have a chance to him where he might put all of those pipes,,

Have you had COVID? Your throat irritation could be from remnants of it. I have developed a lot of issues since I had COVID that I never had before. I am reading about Long Covid and believe that some of my troubles could be after effects of the virus.

I stopped for a short period of time when I was getting my wife to stop cigarette smoking. I didn't think it was fair to help her stop smoking and I was enjoying a bowl. Luckily she realized that cigarettes and pipes are too completely different creatures and don't mind my pipe smoking. She quit cigarettes which I am very pleased about and she hasn't had a desire for one in over 14 years. My greatest success was getting her to quit Diet Cokes which I believe was doing her more harm than the cigarettes.

Maybe you're over doing it. Maybe a certain blend or blend genre doesn't agree with you. Maybe it has nothing to do with pipe smoking.

Lay off until your throat returns to normal then start smoking one bowl per day to see if that causes the throat irritation. Experiment with different blends. You seem to like red virginia which may be the most often mentioned blend type to cause allergic reactions. Something triggered the throat irritation, now you have to just figure out what it is.

Everyone has to make the best decisions for themselves. Maybe Lighten your load…smoke a bowl once in a while??‍♂️ Possibly, change your prep to see if it lessens throat irritation.
As I’ve stated, my first 6 months sucked in retrospect…burned my ass almost every time until I finally figured out cadence, practiced & manipulated it to my fashion. Now, I can’t tell you the last time I had ? bite or a sore throat caused by ?. ?☕

No one at my work places was ever aware of me smoking at all, since I didn't smoke at work. Although, when my tax preparer asked me if I smoked, and I told her I smoked a pipe, she gave me a big grin and said, "Of course!"

Same way I've known people for decades who never became aware that I was a Vietnam Veteran. I guess I look decidedly unmilitary, though I did pretty well aboard ship and on shore duties. When some find out, they look incredulous, or as if they think I'm joking. Apparently there is some stereotype of that that I don't fit. Boy, we were a wildly variegated bunch of volunteers. Every ethnicity, educational level, home region, and personality. We should have all been given degrees in sociology or psychological counseling.

And a new member hadn't even started. I will let them speak for themselves.
I guess that's me.

Reasons for not starting are:
Can't really afford it.
All my family are non smokers and I don't want to disappoint them.
Don't want my own children to start.
Little time to myself.
I'm in good health, not sure I want to risk that.

I know there are valid counter arguements to each of the above, many of which I am aware of.

I think I like to research things to the nth degree before making a decision.

Eg I spent ages looking at fountain pens before buying a Jinhao X750 for £2.
