Beautiful Ashton! Congrats.

I've been looking at a few of them myself, and I have a question for the experts:

I can't say I know a lot about them (only the basic story...and I own only one) so maybe this is not unusual, but I was under the impression that they all had the red dot on the stem.

So I'm just curious as to why this particular one below does not. I've not yet seen any other new Ashton that doesn't have it...any thoughts?

I have no idea but that one does have some fabulous grain!!

@brian64 I have no earthly idea... I’ve never seen one without the dot. If it was an estate I’d say replacement stem? But it’s new, so... ?

I’d be tempted to email and ask about that particular detail. From the stamping which I can’t really zoom in on, it looks like a 2019? I have a few 2019 Ashton’s and they all have the trademark dot.

@danimalia Thanks for the love haha! I also happen to like those Newgrange Spigots. I don’t normally like black pipes, but something about those... I really enjoy the smooth rim as well. Nice looking pipe you got there.

I received the Peterson Rosslare RI XL90 I ordered the other day. I have to say I’m impressed with the the grain on this piece. There’s some nice flame on the flanks, bird’s eye along the front and all across the bottom. And the Silver work looks fabulous.

The Hallmark looks to be an “L”... which would appear to date it to the 1990’s...? Old stock band on a new pipe?

I’m happy with it!

@craig61a thats even lovelier than the stock photos would’ve suggested. I have a few Peterson’s where the date letter is “cut in half” like the one you’ve got there. I suspect it’s more like a “D” or an “I” from recent manufacture pipes. 2014 or 2019, respectively.

Well, I did inquire with SPC about it and was told that it may have been missed by their internal QC...and they are going to pull the pipe and have it looked into.

@brian64 you should’ve snagged it and had the only known Ashton without the dot! ?

LOL ... it did cross my mind...assuming it's a rare production mistake...but you'd never be able to prove it's not just a replacement stem, which it may be....somehow...but who knows.

It figures the one I was about to snag would have some strange issue.

Looking at it with higher magnification, I guess it would be an “I” with the right of the top cross bar obliterated.

I bought a flame grain XL90 a few weeks ago. It has a letter “A”. Imagine that’s been sitting a few years.

Kinda wish they would stamped the band on the one I just got in the same orientation as the one in the photo above so as not to ruin the hallmark...

The flame grain has a “Sloppy” P on the stem... ?

Well, I doubt it would be characterized as a replacement stem down the road. Who would go through the trouble of sourcing that type of material.

Misprint - rare as a 24 cent Airmail stamp... Score!

What am I missing here? It was a vulcanite stem I believe...why would that be a lot of trouble? Has vulcanite become a difficult material to source?

Just ordered some Kings Imperial pipes from Blakemar Briars:

Bent (Walnut Smooth) - http://blakemar.co.uk/bent-walnut-smooth
Squat (Walnut Smooth) - http://blakemar.co.uk/squat-walnut-smooth

(I've linked to the smooth version but I got them in black rusticated.)

That bent pipe is as big as the Peterson House Pipe but cost as much as a Rossi, and the Squat is pretty close to the Brebbia Jumbo pipes I am so fond of.
I could hardly believe when I saw the price, this would be a $200 pipe from Nording or any normal manufacturer, that it's a British made pipe makes it all the more special (to me at least).
The only other pipe of this kind that I've seen recently are the Lorenzo Titano pipes sold at James Barber.
