The real matter is the pipe, and it's spectacular for the period, both in terms of the fineness of the graining and the size of the pipe. I've seen others of similar straight grain quality from later periods, but nothing quite like this from the pre WW1 period.
I know this is the British pipes thread, but I have seen a few Petersons posted in here, so I'm guessing that's kosher (my apologies if not!).
The tricolour band obviously stands out and is, to my knowledge, unique to the 1998 (and 2023) SPD releases. However, the stamping on this example is wildly different from what I've seen on all other 1998 SPDs, which is "A PETERSON PRODUCT" over MADE IN THE REP. over OF IRELAND on one side and then ST. PATRICK'S over DAY on the other side. Conversely this one has MADE IN THE over REPUBLIC over OF IRELAND on one side and then PETERSON'S over "DUBLIN" on the other, with no reference to St. Patrick's Day, which has me very curious.
I'd love it if anyone has some insight into this pipe, and whether it's actually a 1998 SPD or if there's some other line that used the tricolour band that I don't know about!

Just speculation here: Peterson launched a Dublin Filter series for the German market (circa 2020?) that had a metal “P” in the stem and a black and and silver band—I wonder if the pipe in question is related, but mistakenly got a green, white, and orange band instead of the black and silver one.
Ah, interesting hypothesis! I actually have a Dublin Filter that was bought in England around 2011. The 999 above is not drilled for a filter, but maybe there was a non-filter sister series at one point?

I’ve never seen a Sasieni one dot shaped like that. It just doesn’t look like an early 20’s pipe. The stinger is correct, but I wonder if this was produced by the successor company.
The successor would not have made a stinger equipped stem, right? Those Specially Selected were all eight dots, right?
The only ones that I'm aware of were the commemorative 8 Dots. Where's the patent number?
Some of the Claret pipes said specialy Selected as well and those had one dot.
Edit: the band is a bit suspect as well. Wouldn't call it an early family era at all what with the shape, the band and the color of the dot.

The only ones I've ever seen were those mentioned in Mark's book. Probably a 'white whale' for a couple of Peterson collectors, driving the price up.
I missed his part of your reply earlier, yep, the Patent number is MIA. I think this definitely points to a latter era pipe.

This extraordinary 1883 Barling went for an amazing price. The condition is terrific. I would have loved to have added this to the pile, but it went WAY above my pay grade. I hope that whoever bought it knows how to protect it before firing it up, assuming that it will get smoked. Otherwise it's going to become a very expensive and rare piece of kindling.

The price of the Parker may be a record-setter, but it did not surprise me. It’s early, it’s a blast, and it must be nearly the only of its kind.
