Not eBay, but these just sold at auction for £1,000 (plus 20% fees, etc.).

USD$70 each for a lot of tins a percentage of which will almost certainly have failed seals. And I would surmise that the buyer was willing to go much, much higher. I have two tins of this stuff around here somewhere, it's actually quite good. ;)

I wanted those. Not to smoke but to assess the nomenclature. I hope someone here won them to post better pics.

My earliest pipes with the H.L stamp is a 1917 Orlik antique bruyere.

I had wondered by the style of the pipes whether these were Orlik too - not that I have seen a special grain stamp on their pipes before

Yes I was bidding, but something has come up so I had to let them go.

Of course I would have smoked them, I’m not an imbecile 😂 just saying my main interest in them was to see their stamping.

I had only really seen Harrods advertisements from the 30s, and those were specific to their HL deluxe pipes. From what catalog is your BBB picture?

Apart from harrods, the only other HL tobacconist I could think of is Herbert love, and while I think they used an HL stamp back in the day, their pipes were marked with the shop name too.

My fascination with the HL stamp started with a tiny devil anse which is now in the possession of @alaskanpiper

" Savory’s was started in 1885 by H L Savory & Co of London. Originally they were a retail tobacconists (Baby’s Bottom was one of their original tobacco blends) and managed the feat of holding Royal Warrants from both Edward VII and HIM The German Emperor. Their success prompted them to open shops at 178 Bond Street in London and in the High Street in Oxford. They were however not to continue as a separate company and in the 1940’s were bought up by Dunhill " .
