Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

I'm a little puzzled about this one. Up until earlier this year, I had never heard of or seen the Moreton shape (sort of a banker?). The giant tobacco shop auction from earlier this year, released a number of unsmoked 2nd line Sasienie's in this shape they've sold close to pipes in Four Dot 1st line range. Today, this one went for just over $100. I had this Four Dot Walnut listed for a month or so, at a BIN of $150, with no takers. That is puzzling to me.

This is a shape 60 "Moreton" from Sasieni. It has nice rustication around the bowl and shank.The stem is clean and original, stampings are crisp. Condition is "Unsmoked". The stem has been carefully sanitized.

I tell you bro, there is never a good guess as to what will sell and what won't. I've noticed it change by the day. Certain pipes should be getting much more then what they are actually selling for or vice-versa. The pipe investing game is kind of like gambling because something you pay for today could sell for less or more the next day. It doesn't matter what it's worth to us, just matters what others are willing to pay.

Totally agree with you. Pipes are not an investment unless you're buying them at dealer's cost. Anything you buy at retail, you will be lucky to get more than half your money back.

The "T" means a small flat area was ground on the bottom of the pipe so it would sit upright on a table or other level surface.

Very interesting! George, was the pipe sent back to England to have this done for a customer? Or was a percentage of the catalogue offered in this way as a matter of choice at the time of purchase? It seems not to be a very common mark.

No, I bought it immediately when I saw: (1) bowling ball stem, (2) suggestive shape, (3) a pixel or two that may have been a spot, and (4) the $38 was a steal even for seconds-lines of those shapes. There are three Sasieni seconds in there as well.

GREAT eyes! I thought there were some Sasieni 2nd line, but would have never taken the shot. Nice job and reward for due diligence!

Nice score. In my short time smoking pipes, I’ve been able to snag 2 dunhills in lots. 1 I recently sold for what I paid for the lot but it took more work then what yours is gonna take, to get to a sellable condition. Congrats.

That's been up for a year or so, I sent him an offer of £10 ages ago and he sent me a load of foul messages saying he'd reported me to eBay (I did send the offer as a bit of a wind up, so I suppose it was my fault...).

It's a lovely pipe, though I'm finding I'm getting used to the bowling ball stem. It's creating the illusion to my eye that it's thoroughly oxidised despite having a nice shine on it now.

I had a bit of a windfall last week with this lovely Barling '56 with "J.J. Fox" stamp. Cleaned up nicely with some deep, dark wax in the craggy blast.

I can't get over how much I like this one. The height of mid-century English elegance! I have a 40s Barling sandblast pot with a similarly craggy blast, but I love the military mount on this one.
