I was actually the one who won it. Lol. It arrived today. It had polishing residue on it and nothing was burned from polish. I kind of wish they didn’t buff the silver as I like the patina. Anyway. There are no cracks in the shank to the naked eye. But the merchant service special stamp is covered up half way. And I’m not a pipe repair expert, so I honestly couldn’t say. There were a few very very small striations or inclusions at the shank, so maybe they did it as a precaution.
Or someone just wanted some extra bling. Congrats on the buy. You've been scoring big!

I just don't understand the appeal of these carved pipes - the carving is amateurish at best (the Meerschaum guys would probably laugh). This Comoy's went over $600.

This one did not appeal to me whatsoever. The carving is pretty crude. But, it's a rarity, and some people respond to that.

Congrats you lucky b.....d , what a wonderful piece of pipe history.
Do you not feel tempted to remove the silver band ?
I’m going to send it out to have the stem all cleaned up and the mortise all cleaned and inspected to verify there isn’t anything wrong with it. I’ll probably auction it off at some point. I’ve had a few already in different sizes. They honestly were just neat history pieces and nothing super special. I think I’m going to save up for one of Scottie’s pipes in the pencil shank.

Here are a couple of recent Peterson ebay victories. I guess they ended a few weeks ago, but I just got back in town Saturday night to open the boxes.

Peterson 588 Vintage Briar Estate Tobacco Pipe- Irish Free State With Pouch/box | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/284834628702

Antique Vintage Carved Block Pierced Figural Meerschaum Pipe Head Wolf Bear ? | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/334444368584

The briar is a quaint shape 'Irish Free State' 588. I've been looking for a 500-series Peterson, so now I can stop.

The meer appears to be a terrier dog. It went cheap because it's missing its stem and there are no K&P stampings on the silver band. That's not too unusual for pipes sold out of their Dublin shop. It's definitely a Peterson pipe, as the case is a genuine Peterson meer case (they never made a briar that this case would have fit) and the stummel fits perfectly, but the band may not be original. I'll have a stem made.

Anyone familiar with the seller ?

Yes, he's from the New Orleans area, and was a member here. He had inherited a massive collection of pipes from his father(?) and has been selling them for the past several years. I can't recall his forum name.

I've had some good conversations with him begin when asking about his pipes - honest and his descriptions are accurate. He's had some incredible pipes over the years.

But I get it. If it's a pipe you've been 'needing' for a while, you sometimes pay a stupid price. Fortunately I have only had to do that once. I put in my stoopid high snipe on one of the giant Peterson Patent House pipes, and paid almost the exact amount of my high bid. Now if a similar pipe ever shows up, I can ignore it, not wanting to see a wiser person get it for half what I paid.

I’ve had several good experiences with him and even griped about one or two and he refunded me the full price immediately.
