I thought the same thing. That had better grain than most Blue Ribands I've seen in a long time. But not $800 worth, that's for sure. The button did appear to have been buffed or sanded down.
These r just incredible. Where do these pipes come from. there must be more of them out there but r they just left in someones attic or r they only in private estates. the mind boggles.35 bids on an unsmoked set of Petersons from 1908.

Pipes described as unsmoked have been inspected and polished. It was included in displays I was invited to exhibit at the 2018 and 2019 Chicagoland International Pipe Expos.GM. For 112 years they have been set aside, well protected and rarely handled.www.ebay.com
Looks like crap to me. If that lot is hiding something special, it's lost on me.Not technically eBay, but was looking at this set of pipes and the bidding suddenly went crazy.

Yeah my thoughts too. It just went up from 30 odd to 200 in about an hour. Auctions don’t normally go crazy on our domestic internet site, there is just not the competition There’s no way I’m bidding on it, as my pipe budget tops out at $30nz - most of my estates have been $5-$15nz. Just wanted to know if anyone picked up on something I hadn’t

I've never seen a 9242 Virgin, with the Hand Cut stem stamp. I was in at a max of $325. I sold my mint 9242 New Standard a few years ago for $500, if memory serves (still have another)Oh My! $450.00

The stem is Marked; "GBD" & "Hand Cut". The wood bowl has the rustic Prehistoric finish. It has deep color and nice grain lines. I am NOT a smoker and know very little about smoking pipes. This will need a proper careful cleaning and possible restoration.www.ebay.com
i have so far never had to pay more than the equivalent of $15us for estate pipes - in NZ it seems the more expensive a pipe is, the worse it is. Bizzare
