Some fun auctions today on Easter Sunday.

$300 for an unsmoked Astley's, yikes!

This 1989 Straight Grain, single X size Ashton tempted me. I love that size (38 grams!), and you don't often see the SG and Sovereign stamping. A tad too rich for my blood.

Rare Peterson's are really driving the estate market these days (blame Mark Irwin). I've lost track of the current record, but $3400 is pretty strong!

Pardon my ignorance but is that high or low? I was thinking of bidding on this one.
Astley's used to be the red-headed stepchild of the estate pipe world, so that is very high. Someone bought all their stock, and the James Upshall pipe name/inventory and devalued both brands. He has since passed, and I haven't watched Astley values, but that seems pretty high to me.

I missed this one or I would have bid on it. For an unsmoked pipe from 1988 with some pedigree and beautiful grain I don’t think it was high at all. As you can see from Al’s response, different people are going to have different opinions and budgets. Obviously, at least the high bidder thought it was worth it.

I suspect that might be the most money ever paid for a Peterson.🤔
Holy crap i believe is the correct response to that price.

What I question is THIS jump in bids, bidding 2000 dollars over the last bid? Must not be showing some bids or something.

EDIT: Nevermind that was a max bid and it finally came into play when someone actually bid more than that, someone did jump the bids by a couple thousand though.

This is a sad end to a 9BC.

I know! I saw this this morning and thought this would be my chance, then I saw the other photos...

At least it seems like it was frequently (maybe too much so) enjoyed until its demise.

More than likely a bidder retracted, or was barred by the seller in the midst of bidding, which results in just such a void in the bidding record as you noticed.
