Beautifully said sablebrush. I've no doubt your words will inspire anti-social responses.
@ mayfair70: But the question remains...is a blend with Pipe Elf topping defined as an aromatic?

At just under a year, I am by no means an expert. Hell, I barely qualify as a rookie! My biggest piece of advice to newcomers is try any suggestions (that make sense to you) and remember that YOUR enjoyment is what matters. I sometimes throw half a bowl out, and sometimes smoke to the bottom. Sometimes my ash is fine and white, other times lumpy and mottled grey. I judge a bowl successful when I feel satisfied, not when others tell me I'm satisfied. $.02 deposited.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
There is obviously no such thing as ONE way of properly packing a pipe as cigmaster so aptly put it. Different cuts take different strokes as it were, as does the pipe to a certain extent. As for this never ending 'smoking down to a fine grey ash' has always made me shake my head. It seems to have become some type of catch phrase among tobacco reviews by those that don't know their ash from their ass and now has evolved into some type of achievement by those new to pipe smoking. Why on earth would anyone wish to end a perfectly good smoke with the taste of ash no matter if it's white, grey, off white, black, etc.?

You know, for years I just thought I was doing fine smoking my pipes.
Until that Newton arsehole showed up.

I see...it's no longer in production. Apparently no one thought to maintain Pipe Elf reproduction rates along with self-immolation rates. I'm surprised Mr. Pease was so short-sited in that regard. Very sad and tragic indeed. But now we're back where we started without a Pipe Elf solution to the dilemma in question.

This may not be entirely true...
"...is a blend with Pipe Elf topping defined as an aromatic?"

 I love threads like this one!
Now if someone could enlighten me, what the heck is "gravity fill"? Since the day I gave up messing around with packing methods my pipes smoke best. I just stuff it into the bowl without further ado and set fire to it. Does smoke come out of the proper end? If yes, then smoke it..... :puffy:
