Care to share with us what the expensive lessons were?
A couple of expensive pipes that I ended up not liking all that well. Nothing wrong with them, they just didn't suit me once I figured out what I like. Sold them at a loss, which I expected. I just wish I'd have figured out what I really liked sooner before wasting the money.
Capt I guess you love those princes eh?
Yeah, a wide shallow bowl is the only thing that really works for me and my smoking style. I've been looking at maybe getting some pots as well, like Sav 316's or 305's. That might suit me also.

As the on/off "collector" - I had a 2 pipe year (all within 30 days) and #3 as a hopeful birthday gift (won't know until late this month). I did acquire more tobacco than I normally do. So all told, I added to my quirkly little collection (I don't stay with one shape or brand - I buy what speaks to me).
Both pipes this year were Boswell's:

Nose Warmer Weathered Stone Poker

Nose Warmber Weathered Chubby Stubby
For the birthday list:

For the year I will have to figure it up, but I did back way off on TAD this year, well sorta
Next year is going to be an appreciation year. On PAD and TAD. Tampers do not come under either of those do they 8O

8O Considering that I have started over with pipe smoking exactly one year ago "severe" isn´t the right word for it. I must have bought easily over 150 pipes (lot´s of estates and even more sold again), many stands, a 60 pipe cabinet, several lighters, a press for making my own plug tobacco and what have you. In just a years time I started refurbishing estate pipes and now I am considering to grow my own tobacco in spring. 8O
Just in case you were asking: Yes, I have a job and a family!

Do you have a 320? Aka Author? I think the first 320 I bought is like .95 diameter and 1.35 or 1.4 deep.
I've got a 316KS and the bowl is really tough to pack well. I personally prefer the 320.

9 Briars and 4 Cobs in 2015. Definitely purchased more than I personally think I should have, but after seeing how badly PAD hit some of your guys, I suddenly don't feel as bad... ;)

First 5 months of smoking pipes and bought 2 Savinellis Punto Oro (611ks and 804ks), one Savinelli Capri. one La Glorieuse rhodesian and my dad gave me my first pipe, a Hardcastle Old Bruyere Giant.
I´d say a little over a pipe a month...

Okay, I don't feel as ashamed of my year's total now. I think I accumulated 25(ish) pipes, and maybe 10 cobs. I want to say it was an abnormal collecting year for me -- but we won't know until the end of next year's inventory.

2015 was a productive year. I went from around 70 pipes, all high grade to a little over 130, adding mostly pre-WWll Barling's Make and several BBB, Loewe, and Dunhill pieces. After 45 years of pipe smoking pricing is not an issue and nothing tastes or smokes quite as well as old British wood. My exceptions are the occasional S Bang, Chonowitsch, and Eltang.

I went from 5-7 pipes around christmas last year to almost 30 now. Granted about 10 were cheap lot buys from ebay to learn how to restore. Don't ask me (or tell my wife) about the TAD though.

Unfortunately only got to keep 4 of the pipes I bought this year and sold 3 Ferndown. I was able to keep 3 Ferndown and one Askwith.

2 MM cobs and 5 briars. They were all bought locally at B&Ms. I'm not terribly comfortable buying pipes online.
I may get 2 more. Last year there was a boxing day buy 1 get 1 half off sale. Depends on the selection and if they run the sale again of course.
