For about five years, I purchased $300 a month, and that was back when prices were cheaper. It was easy just to buy 5lbs of bulk. 1 lb if I wasn’t sure about the tobacco. When I hit 200 lbs, I backed off. I have about 400 lbs now, with half that being homegrown. I still buy, with all of these ltd editions and such.

I probably won’t smoke it all, but whatever I want, has age on it. And, I’ve thrown away stuff when the mood hits.

Is it too much? I am not needing the room, nor is it in anyone’s way. What is too much, only you can answer.

It comes down to how much do you smoke. Figure 3 to 4 grams a bowl and multiply that by how many bowls you smoke a month, then multiply by 12.
I aimed for a ten year supply of my favorite blends and pretty much stopped buying about 5 years ago. Since then I've bought maybe 5 pounds of new releases that I wanted to try. My consumption must have gone down considerably because I still have way more than I'm likely to live long enough to smoke.
It's not so much that we want to have X years of supply as that we want to have X years supply of our favorite smokes. The other poundage doesn't count.

Coincidentally, I just did a cursory inventory last week. Bulk and tins came in at just shy of 20 pounds, jars perhaps another 10 or so. Obviously puny compared to the lunatics above (not making a differentiation here, as I count myself a lunatic as well, though for slightly different reasons I shall not discuss here), but enough to last me the rest of my life, even if I tripled my current consumption (0-5 bowls per week).

I would normally say that I draw the line at hoarding past the point of what one would reasonably smoke in a lifetime. But if I did that, these lunatics (again, the other ones, not myself) would beat the shit out of me, and steal my cellar, gram by gram. Small price to pay for a forum that, as of three seconds ago, has no initiation ritual(s).

The nice thing about having “too much” is that if I want to show up to a pipe club or gathering, I can toss out some tins that I’ve grown cold towards and enjoy seeing folks get all happy. Or, share a bunch of burley twists that I grew, and show off a tad.

I will still have enough left over to fuel my pyre when the day comes.

Haven’t been doing this long enough to compete with some here. I have about twenty pounds total. About half of that spread over four blends that I really, really like. The other half made up of a dozen or so ‘dead end blends’. So called because, though I will smoke them, they are blends that I probably won’t buy again. I don’t know when I will reach the ’thats enough‘ level. Not there yet for sure.

Home grown twists, that is impressive. Family grew small amount of "baccor" in Western NC when I was growing up. Believe they mostly chewed it

Ironically, I grew the burley in Western NC, just outside Hot Springs. We spent a summer in our cabin there and I befriended a tobacco farmer, and learned what I could about burley. It was a lot if fun, hard work, but I have no plans to grow anymore… but, I’ve said that before, ha ha.
