I've read reports of the tonquin topping on Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake almost completely vanishing after 5 years in the cellar
I actually don't like 1792 fresh, but after 2-3 years, I love it.
That must be why. That flavor tames down a bit.

For cellaring tobaccos, Virginias are where it's at. I smoke a lot of burley blends and while they don't necessarily get better with age, I still try to stock up for the simple fact that these days you never know when a blend will be suddenly discontinued. Also, it's not ever going to get cheaper so I put away what I can afford to put away.

At 31, I’m too young to stock up on enough tobacco to last the rest of my life like the rest of these old geezers lazing around collecting social security checks. puffy

I highly doubt most tobacco would still be good after 45 years, assuming I make it to my mid-70s. I smoke around 3lbs a year so I’ll try to keep my cellar around 60-70 lbs since that would be around 20 years worth of tobacco.

This is what I have decided for myself but you’ll have to decide what’s right for you.

I think many aren't shocked by this number after hearing people having several hundred lbs. but I think most forget you are in Canada. I'm extremely impressed that you amassed that much tobacco.

I'm sure as heck impressed! I live in the US where tobacco is relatively cheap and my cellar is slightly under 4 lbs, and 3 lbs of that is just recently purchased Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices since I wanted to make sure I had enough for the next 10 years or so. Realistically I can't see my cellar ever growing larger than 15 lbs even if I stocked up on enough of all my favorite blends to last a couple decades.

In all honesty, i might not even make it through 1/4 of it, if my current rate of smoking didn't increase, even if I lived to 100. However, when I retire someday and I end up smoking a little more often, it'll be there waiting.

There was a time long before, and during Covid, that everything was coming through the border, unchecked. I was buying very heavily at that time. Unfortunately those days are gone, and they are thoroughly checking and taxing everything coming across. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity, but I feel bad for the Canadians just getting into the hobby now and trying to amass a cellar.

Yeah it’s a damn shame. Glad you were able to utilize that window.

This is exactly why I stocked up when I did. It's less about building a "cellar" and more about protecting yourself from the inevitability of tobacco becoming harder and harder to get in this country.
I'd do the same with cigars, but they are too fussy to age.

For about five years, I purchased $300 a month, and that was back when prices were cheaper. It was easy just to buy 5lbs of bulk. 1 lb if I wasn’t sure about the tobacco. When I hit 200 lbs, I backed off. I have about 400 lbs now, with half that being homegrown. I still buy, with all of these ltd editions and such.
Though I don't have a Doctorate in tobacco , you have the symptoms of stage 4 TAD .
Would advise seeking professional help (or sending me 50 Lbs. or so)

well, seeing how much other people have cellared compared to mine, I went ahead and bought another 5 pounds
Yup. That right there was every day back in 2014-16 with the heavy hitters showing off what they bought. And the TAD posts were just icing on the cake. Just when it stated to die down a bit, McClelland shuttered and the next cellaring craze was on. And throughout was the pressure to seek out and score as many esoterica blends as one could. Lol

You cannot buy too much, and in this group there will always be found the motivation/justification/compulsion to get another 5 pounds... lol
