That’s why I say you make a good point.
However, if (for arguments sake) you were just starting out and tried to purchase all of the pipes you currently own and all of the pipes you have ever owned (especially considering you prefer to give away or throw away pipes rather than reselling) and you wanted to amass the cellar that you have (for variety and protection against the tobacco apocalypse) it would require a substantial financial commitment that would easily rival if not exceed $85 every week, 2 weeks or month.

My only point is that pipe smoking can result in a significant savings over cigarette smoking but that that savings is often offset by the smoker’ PAD/TAD purchases.
When I smoke on the front porch, the young joggers give me a sly look like they think it must be pot. When in public my age well beyond senior citizenship allows me to have selective hearing confusion and if requested to cease I would ask “how the hell do I put it out”!

I smoke pipes and cigars in my basement, or out on my deck, or sometimes in the driveway on the tailgate of my truck.
My wife doesn't approve, she can't distinguish pipe smoking from smoking cigarettes', smoking is smoking to her, regardless of how many times I explain the difference.
It's my thing and she knows that I do it to relax, and her bitching about it will go no where, so she leaves me alone about it.

In my experience, most people who have any opinion to share about pipe smoking think it's cool and kind of old-timey. I could do without the old-timey handlebar moustache hipster thing that I see on pipe social media frequently, but I'm at least happy that there seems to be a decent impression among the public regarding pipe smoking.

I've been a pipe smoker for about 25 years or so, so all my friends and family just know that's what I do. No one really says anything about it. I don't smoke out in public though. I almost always smoke my pipes alone in the back yard. It's really my favorite way to enjoy it. Sometimes, I'll smoke with my girlfriend after a nice meal. She doesn't mind it at all and actually supports it because she knows how much I enjoy it. "Hey HitchensDog, you should be outside with a pipe. It's a beautiful morning." lol

I hear so often on here that so many places are non-smoking. But, when I see a picture of a cigarette with a red line through it, I just assume it means no cigarettes. I find that most people are cr4azy in love with the idea of people smoking pipes.
I have a Starbucks that I go to that has no smoking signs, but when I politely ask, they will always let me smoke my pipes there. there are several restaurants, very nice ones, that will let me smoke after a meal. Embarrassingly, on many occasions I have forgotten that I was clenching and have been down several aisles of the grocery store, and not until I open a frozen foods door that I realize that I have been smoking in a store.

It is annoying, but if I am setting somewhere enjoying my pipe, someone will come along and ask to set next to me, and just start giving me their life story. It happens all the time. I have no idea why people associate pipesmokers as being some sort of therapist, but it annoys the crap out of me, because to respond, I have to remove my pipe from my clench. This happens even when I am out visiting other cities and states. So, I know that it not just an Alabama thing.

I think that as long as your not someone covered in tattoos, a greasy ball cap, and open carry, and instead you're someone who takes some pride in how you look, people will embrace your pipesmoking.

I wasn't kidding about having non-smoking people ask me to smoke in their homes. It has happened.

I do run across the occasional anti-type person. The obligatory "cough cough" when they see my pipe, but I can usually warm them up with a big smile and a courteous tip of the hat.

I will say, that it has been my observation that about 90% of people love to see people smoking pipes. It just depends on what kind of person, or in other words, how you present yourself.

I am more perplexed by guys covered in tattoos, old tshirts, cut offs, and greasy old ball caps telling me that the world hates pipesmokers. No, maybe you've just turned yourself into something that most people cannot relate to. Why?

For me, its the standard story - aromatics are fragrant friendly and preferred among friends and strangers. There are a few family members who do enjoy that lat camp fire from time to time.

I only smoke at home. So it's not an issue. I used to smoke 40 a day so my wife is much relieved I only smoke the pipe every few days .

My wife likes it and my son is also a pipe and cigar smoker. Personally I don't care about what other people think, I smoke outside only and it's really nice to have a pipe or cigar in a park or on a bench in the city. I never get comments because I look like a person who should be left alone.

The following comment is not directed at you per se but forum members in general: I am so often confused why so many people on this forum either brag about being or relish in being antisocial. It runs counter to human evolutionary development as well as many other aspects of civility. I wonder if there is a correlation between pipe smoking in our times and the desire to be left alone.

You got that right, I do like to be surrounded by other antisocial pipe or cigar smokers though.

But isn't rugged individualism what America was built on? Isn't it something that is celebrated in an almost quasi-religious fashion, in countless books and films? Never been to America so can't say for sure, but it seems that way from this side of the pond. Maybe I've watched too many John Wayne films lol

Yes, in part. But the other side of America is our willingness and desire to be welcoming and seen as extending a hand of friendship. We are a bi-polar people for sure. John Wayne meets Mr. Rodgers.

I used to live in a communist country and after I left, for about 35 years I liked to think that the West was not having those tendencies and that individualism was a force for innovation, which it is. Now I see the West mutating into a hybrid socialist/communist monster for which it's not well equipped. All this thanks to "our willingness and desire to be welcoming and seen as extending a hand of friendship" to even the ideological enemy that uses this statement to destroy what you said: "human evolutionary development as well as many other aspects of civility". So you see, having a pipe outdoors, being left alone and not being judged by a passerby is a minimum and yet you call this antisocial.

I see your point. Allow me to amend my original thoughts to more clearly state what I was thinking- not antisocial but unfriendly. I agree with everything you stated and I myself prefer my own company and oddly enough, am quite happy to be left alone. But I am friendly and I scoff at rude behavior. I hope this clarifies my thinking. And for what it’s worth, humans are by evolutionary design the most socially dependent organisms on the planet. It is why we succeed. I doubt that any evolutionary biologist alive would argue against that statement.

We don't always succeed, socialism/communism is an evolutionary dead-end, it perverts "the most socially dependent on the planet" notion to turn economical and social classes, sexes, religions and most importantly, individuals into enemies of the state and what they define as the common good.

Now as for unfriendly, seeing the message of governments about tobacco, most people have an unconscious fear of any smoker in a 20 feet radius, so talk about a reversal of roles. Being left alone is a guarantee that I'll enjoy my pipe smoking and if this makes me unfriendly, well this is the least of my worries :)

There are introverts in this world, me being one of them and maybe this forum is populated with many. It's not just a desire to be left alone, it's practically a necessity for introverts. For so long society has frowned on people who prefer being left alone. We're considered strange, aloof and unfriendly, even though we think better, work better and feel better in a solitary environment. Being around people drains folks like me. Extroverts on the other hand need the opposite and are energized by the company of others and function better in a group.

So, being the introvert that I am, if people want to hassle me about what I'm doing while being alone and not violating their boundaries, they can kiss my ass. Not bragging, or relishing in being the way I am, it's just the way it is. I can accept the fact that I might seem unfriendly to some people who don't know me.

There are some interesting TED talks on youtube about introversion.
