How Cold is "Too Cold?"

The problem in the NW is wind + rain. Wind alone I can use a Zippo & windcap. Rain alone I can shelter from. But both together it's hard to keep anything dry & burning, especially since my deck faces South, and most storms blow in from the SW. Rarely gets below freezing where I am, but the dampness makes cold sink in.

I've got one of these to keep warm & keep the rain off, comes to mid-calf. Note its wool so not too flammable & dark color so you don't see where the ash fell:

I'll smoke outside with the temp above 50 provided it isn't stormy or real windy. Then I will go inside and smoke in the den.

@karam does it get humid in Greece with those temperatures? I never imagined, I always thought it would be a more dry heat. Everything above 25 degrees overhere it instantly is 90% rH , as it rains regularly and the soil (mostly clay) holds so much water it evaporates.

Generally speaking I avoid smoking outside, unless temperatures reaches 77f(25 c) can't taste tobacco that well and during the winters here on the coast, this very photo should tell it better than thousand words,add here wind and it pure miserable

Has anyone else experienced muted flavor while in colder temps? I could have guessed it was my fault, but the latter half of the smoke is more pronounced, and the first half dull in the cold. I attributed this to a psychosomatic reaction to staying warm and puffing in the battle to finish the smoke.

Really depends on the place, Athens is not humid, for example, but Crete is.

Now I feel uncomfortable when the temperature drops below 50F, I visited Ireland in late November 2 years ago and I was wearing a scarf up to my eyes, that horrible persistent atlantic wind makes me wonder how humans could colonize such hostile lands.

Below 50 degrees, I move into my insulated/heated garage/workshop. By the end of February, it feels like a prison. I'll grab a pipe on a sunny day outside in Jan/Feb, but they are fleeting. If I have to gear up too much, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze anymore.

In the winter it’s always a challenge to find ways to smoke outside when it’s really cold. If the winds not howling and it’s above 30 deg, I’ll usually go outside and find a place in the yard that’s out of the wind and in full sun. One place I retreat to on occasion is our greenhouse. I put my portable camping chair inside and enjoy a smoke. I have been known to smoke in a duck blind when it was so cold we had to break ice off the decoys when we picked ‘em up to go home.
I’m interested in the air cleaner idea mentioned by @ray47.

I don't smoke outside regardless of the weather. I have an air filter next to my desk in the den and that handles the smoke just fine.

Bionaire F250. It's an old one but works great. I clean the 3 filters once a month

The Bionaire F250 recirculates. Just keep the reuseable filters clean and you'll be just fine.

Generally, for me it is more a factor of wind:

No wind….. little worries…. easily feel comfortable smoking my pipe outside down to -10 or so. Colder than -10, then the amount of time spent outside really wanes.

Any wind above 7-8mph…… then I start feeling gunshy about going out around +10 or so. Cold, biting WIND is what is my “Achilles heel”.

That does not negate the notion that I want to move to Florida when I retire! ?
