High-End Pipes - Do They Improve the Smoking Experience?

Sorry, have to show this one off as well, just received it this morning. Rubio Hawkbill. I like what Jose does better than Cooke whose pipes sell for $700 up on eBay. This one was $500 which included the Euro conversion and shipping from Spain. Passes a pipe cleaner effortlessly.

This is a very interesting thread. My pipes are on average $300 range, occasional I spend $700 on something I think I can’t live without. Maybe every few months, I would find an excuse to fall in love again with another pipe. Most of the time I would buy to try how a particular artisan pipe smokes, after reading about the history and culture. I can’t really say if a high end pipe smokes better but I can sure tell you which pipe makes me Feel better smoking it. For me it’s not only about the taste of the smoke but also about the aesthetic & history. So far there has been many hits and misses but I did enjoy every bit of the journey. Just like how a Patek tells the same time as my iphone, and how a vintage air-cooled Porsche gets the driver to his destination. Maybe it’s also about the joy of ownership, collecting and experiencIng the joy of the moment of smoking that over-priced briar, at certain life’s milestones. Value is often subjective I think. If I know I will die tomorrow , I’d probably buy that $10,000 Bo Nordh for that final smoking adventure. But for now, maybe not ...

Having over 150 pipes in my 45 year smoking tour, my 2 Boswells smoke THE best, hands down. Both were under 150 bucks. I have some other brand names ($350 pipes) that sit and collect dust. These days, I'd never pay over 300 bucks for a pipe. new or used.

I refuse to ever buy any commissioned pipes ever again or anything brand new or unsmoked (with exception to Boswells pipes). I prefer the older estate Petersons in the 200 price range. I have no affiliation whatsoever with JM Boswell other than my very first briar pipe was one of his.

I know that not everyone has the means to drop $2000 on a pipe. I get it. And, the differences between a $200 pipe and a $2000 pipe seems absolutely absurd to most, even old guys that have been smoking pipes for decades. I get it. And, absolutely no one should be made to feel bad for never spending over $200 for a pipe. As I am rolling up on fixed income days, I am just glad that I have been able to save up and get me a few pipes that I am absolutely in adoration of. I mean, I have never been rich enough to buy a Lamborghini or Maserati, but for setting aside some extra cash in times of abundance, I have been lucky enough to be able to afford a few Lamborghinis of pipes.
Is it worth it to me.... absolutely. Is it worth it to everyone else... probably not.

If you are into other things, like watches, wine, stamps, baseball cards, comicbooks, or even pistols.... not everyone is going straight for the most expensive products in those hobbies. Everyone collects for different reasons, and values these collectibles for different uses.

But, whether a more expensive pipe increases the joy one gets from the hobby is subjective. For some it will, but for others it won't. It just depends on what you want o get out of the experience.
