Why not put a pinch of a flavoured cavendish blend into your 400? Not enough to change the flavour much but will impact the room note
There’s a thought…Why not put a pinch of a flavoured cavendish blend into your 400? Not enough to change the flavour much but will impact the room note
No need, I think the Gawith/Hoggarth blends mentioned sound like they might do the trick. I doubt anything they have with any added flavors will be light enough on the topping to suit me.And perhaps this warrants a separate thread on spouse-approved blends?
I would just be careful with some of the Gawith blends if you mostly smoke Newminster. Most Gawith blends will be much more stout in the nicotine department. No need, I think the Gawith/Hoggarth blends mentioned sound like they might do the trick. Yes, the basis of Gold Rush is a very good Va; I have a tin aging, might pick up another for the cellar in my next order.Bronze: Mac Baren Navy Flake
Silver: GL Pease Windjammer
Gold: Ashton Gold Rush (no pun intended)
I’m in the same boat as you BriaronBoerum. My situation is a little different though… I exclusively smoke two pipes of Newminster 400 SNF each day: One on my hour drive to work, and again on my way home.
I’m wanting to smoke inside more… in the morning before I leave for work, winding down in the evening, etc; but my wife complains that the NM-400 smells like cigarettesI don’t believe that, but I digress.
So naturally I’m trying to find something I like as a semi-purist, while appeasing the “pants-wearer” of the house I pay for. I don’t think she’s minded Eastfarthing (Sutliff), and of course she liked the ever-goopy Autumn Evening
I think awhile ago I was looking at something from Hearth & Home (Grandma’s Kitchen?). Maybe some of these Gawith blends are good, without being saturated in topping… the Sweet Maple sounds really nice!
Gotta find something wife-approved that is also purist-approved. I’m kind of wanting that “I love the smell of when my husband smokes inside” reaction. Might be a hard ask. I need to get started on building a den for myself somewhere in the house….
I've been interested in this one for a while. Is it "airy" and "thin" like a lot of other aromatics or does it have a good body and flavour?Sillem’s Black
The topping does fade with time.
I have a tin that has been open for 3 years and the topping is barely discernible.

It's my favourite "crossover" Latakia blend.
Straight after opening the tins, the topping dominates, the Latakia is subsumed.
Once the tin has been open a couple of years the topping fades, but the Latakia is never "in your face"
Thanks both, it will be part of my next purchase.I wanted to thrown in another vote for Sillem's Black. It's a latakia heavy blend with enough spice and complexity to keep you interested, with a strong classic aroma of baked goods, chocolate and vanilla. I don't like aros and I love Sillem's Black.
That’s a real loss to me. There is nothing else like it that I know.Vanilla Rollcake
One of my all time favorite blends. Would fit.Royal Yacht
