But as time has gone on it's become really comical

Get ready to laugh.

That's almost the price from "premium blends" at the three B&Ms nearest to me. It's weird because the Gawiths are like $17 but GL Pease and Dunhill/Peterson tins are $25-30. I like to support them but Jeebus.

Get ready to laugh.

A customer asking a company to almost triple their prices to counteract scalpers is hilariously insane.

Or at least very naive.

I and many loved McClelland but the universal praise didn't start until they closed. Like Esoterica there are equally good and better blends still available.
The issue here for me is not what is "best" but the unique character of each manufacturer. Taste is subjective, but it is undeniable that both blenders had/have a singular, irreplaceable taste style that reaches out across most of their product line. If you enjoy that character over other manufacturers, then those blends are the best...to you.

I am mystified by people who chase "the best" when it comes to such highly individualistic, subjective things like taste and style. It makes me wonder if they indeed have neither taste or style.

I am bored at work , I should call 100-200 places and ask them to buy Penzance, Stonehaven, or Peacehaven for $45 a bag ….lots of laughs will ensue …. I will most likely get zero. That is the type of research I do for work. I could do it , but I know the best use of my time .

I’ve bought 99% of my tobacco from online retailers , I don’t have a single Connection in the b&m space . For the vast majority who don’t have long term relationships no one will get what you got. I question even if you could repeat it . I doubt it
My experience is the same as Jesse's. I have never paid above retail for Esoterica, I don't have and any special, secret connections, yet I've accumulated more bags and tins than I will ever smoke. No need to get butt-hurt about it, we all have different experiences in this thing we call Life.

And those same people take offense when you don't care for the blends that they like.

Dan's point is an essential one, that some blenders create a very distinctive "house style" for their product. Gawith & Hoggarth, McClelland, Germain's (at least until recently), MacBaren, sit in that camp. With McClelland, the extensive processing produced a distinctive house style to their various Virginias, one that no one has duplicated. McClelland Virginia is instantly recognizable.

Still, on a personal level, one may prefer a "house style" or dislike it because there's a definable character to it. Within a blender's offerings one may have preferences. Not everything McClelland made sent me over the moon and some of them I thought fairly average and limited in comparison to their other blends.

Also, I like different flavor profiles, and so am faithless. I'll go where taste leads me.

I have zero retailer connections, never made a single phone call and i've never paid more than like $15 per tin and $45 per bag. Now I just don't know what to do with some of the purchases because I don't care for the house style.

When looking to get in for a drop, look for the smaller places, don't shout it from the rooftops and put something besides Penzance and Stonehaven in your cart and you'll increase your success.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane LOL.

That thread never would have made it anywhere near 10 pages these days.

Never said it wasn't, but you've seen the arguments that have ensued from one person condemning another's favorite.
I don't disagree. I just thought it worth mentioning Dan's point in all of these "what's the best maker, blend, etc" bullshit that goes on in forums like this. It's like comparing persimmons and kumquats or dragon fruit and durian. All tobacco blends aren't created equally.

No worries. Online tobacco sites have created a belief of lack of availability as they only get the scraps of the drops and many have bought into it. Several members of this forum and others know that Esoterica tobacco is very widely available for extended periods of time at B&Ms all over the US. You're just getting to see a meltdown when the gospel is debunked.
When was the last time you noticed esoterica was available all over the country? With its rise in popularity or at least explosion in secondary prices, I have a feeling this is no longer the case.

There's Chinese buyers that I'm pretty sure their full time job is looking for esoterica because I see them all over social media asking about it.

Some of the drop never reaches the general public. Some B&M's have deals where they sell their allotment to a buyer who agrees to buy their entire shipment, or they develop a contact with an agent for overseas buyers. But I suspect that's a small part of the total picture.
I haven't bought any since last year and have no interest in further purchases after finding the quality had taken a significant hit with that last shipment. It's not like I need more of it. I'd been buying for others, but there's no point when I can't trust the product.

It's been that way for over 10 years. The last purchase I made was two 8oz bags of Blackpool for $85 back in May. The owner of the shop called me back though and asked if I wanted any more Dunbar.
