necron99, I am with you. I tried a cob for my flakes and it didn't come close to my briar pipes. It smoked Carter Hall ok but I smoke that maybe once a year. I hate the stems and I am not going to spend money on something so inexpensive by getting a Walker forever for it. For me life is too short to smoke a bad pipe or bad tobacco, every time I light up, I want the perfect smoke, I could vapor lock at any time and I will not be seen dead in my chair with a cob sticking out of my mouth. Now that is just my tastes, obviously I am in the minority but that is ok. Most people who are in the minority are the ones who have vision, taste, class and above all, know a cob is for hillbillies who don't look the part without a cob sticking out of their gaping maws. :nana:
I will not drink the cool aide and you can't make me, so there.

A good quality briar is tough to beat.

Don't get me wrong, I keep a couple of cobs around my shop, in my fishing gear, and around the barn for a smoke while doing my chores, but you will never see me sitting and relaxing in my lounge chair or at the bar with a cob. I even keep a cob in my truck for when someone wants to try out pipe tobacco. I give them the pipe and load it up and show them the ropes a bit. I buy another cob and throw it in the console. However I smoke a briar in my truck and on my motorcycle and any where else that I am not in eminent danger of throwing $100 to the wind.

now my briar range is from $100 to about $300, which is mediocre to some guys but hey more power to 'em. I'd buy a much more pricey pipe if the wallet could take it.

necron, you can buy some great pipes in that price range. I own numerous American artisan estate pipes from 135-275.
My pain threshold is not much higher than yours.
Cobs definitely serve a purpose for fishing, camping, chores, but like you, sitting and relaxing I want briar. Since I don't really fish or camp or do chores( I live in a community that is maintenance free) I get to smoke briar all the time.
Every time I picture a cob, all I can think of is Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. Now she was hot.

If I'm off to the B&M, I'll smoke one of the briars I bought there (seems a little rude to bring along a pipe I bought somewhere else). If I'm out on the back patio with a book, I'll load up a briar - unless I'm in the mood for some Black House, for which I've got a dedicated cob...
If I'm walking at lunch and want a smoke, I'll use one of the small cobs (Pony Express/Missou). If I'm doing yardwork, I'll pull out a cob as well - just in case. Wouldn't want to drop a briar into the weedwacker... :D
In fact, I just bought another Missou, a Huck Finn (both small bowls for lunting), and another Country Gentleman for those times when I want a nice, long smoke during yardwork and don't feel like swapping out the churchwarden stem on my original CG.

Now this is just wrong.......
Now Elly May is a little different story.
One day I was out sailing with some friends and I dropped a Savinelli into the sea......bye bye $130.00 . Now on the boat say hello to Popeye the sailor.

I have many pipes and have a handmade basket (my wife made it) lined with Blue Silk and it is filled with cobs, they are what I grab if the weather is foul, I have chores outside or just want a quick smoke, many have lasted me as much as 15 years. Cobs, smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Well, I guess I’m just a moronic silly old retired fart from Chicago. I have my share of briars, which I love and smoke regularly, but I wouldn’t think twice, and or hesitate for a moment about lighting up one of my burnt rimmed cobs in the Iwan Ries smoking lounge and lighting up a bowl of Astley’s No.44 or WBCDF (which I often do, and it's damn good!). Maybe I’m out in left field someplace and don’t know any better, but I smoke a pipe for the pleasure of the tobacco and not the implement in which it is smoked in (no matter what it looks like) as long as it smokes well.
But, I guess on your outlook on cobs, and those that smoke them, I’m just a scab picking, chicken flicking, belly licking , scum sucking, nose picking hillbilly who lacks vision, taste and class. Well, then I guess that would definitely be me and I’ll have to live with that. But hey... what the hell does a Chicago hillbilly like me know! lol

Hot damn, pass on the hog jowls and grits then pass me my cob!

The Lucite stems were quickly removed and the originals returned to service. Frankly, why am I interested in dressing up a cob--or chewing up an MM stem? After all, replacements are well under a dollar...
I like the "cheap-ass" plastic stems. Would never consider a forever stem. Always smoke my cobs with a paper filter cut in half. Just me...

Last night I smoked a General for the first time, sitting at my favorite coffee house. Filled it with P.S. Bird's Eye, a daily smoke for me.
A very nice 2 hour smoke, only one or two re-lights (when I left it to get a refill of coffee), and nary a gurgle. Sweet and dry compared to any of my briars. Call me a hick, I enjoy the smoke!

I for one am happy that the cob snobs exist. It means that the chances of having a serviceable pipe go the way of Penzance or Stonehaven to be very slim. I have and smoke briars and cobs and do so without prejudice, I'm only picky about what I put in them.

Nah, too skinny for me. I prefer some meat on em. And may be even a little thicker than what most fellas prefer. I prefer mine to look like a Renaissance painting.

Lol ... thought you might like that one Harris! :D
Speaking of Kool-Aid though ... I decided to try an aromatic today called April Dawn (Sutliff).
This tasted like someone took an already poor blend and accidentally spilled cherry Kool-Aid on it.
Chuckles were had as I dumped that crap out and remembered why I don't smoke Aro's!

My newest corn cob pipes just came in the mail. I am about to load it up and give it a try. This is the Mark Twain.

Here is the other one. This is the Huck Finn. It has a smaller bowl but I do not think it has much less capacity than my Dr Grabow. The walls are not near as thick and sturdy feeling as the Mark Twain through.
