I'm a rack man also. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted for a decent price so I made my own. I keep the racks in a cabinet.

I bought 3 3 tiered racks on etsy. Made by a guy in Eastern Europe. Around $80 shipped. Not terribly fancy but decent looking and very functional and space efficient. Why do people with rare and very expensive pipes eschew tracks and store their pipes very? Pipes can get knocked off racks would be my guess.
Don’t use a rack. This provides for easy access and protection. I keep my pipes in a top drawer of a cabinet with a thin layer of bubble protection underlying. It works for me. ?

This household has cats, so racks need to be behind protection from being shoved off whatever surface you've placed them on by critters chasing each other, stretching while curled up, etc.
At the moment, I only have two racks, one holding three pipes, the other holding eight, with a tobacco humidor jar with NO seal on the wooden lid. Waiting 'till I get in some really goopy blend before using that jar.
Am debating with myself whether or not to just take a 1"x6"x4' board and drilling 3 or 4 staggered rows of holes for bowl-down storage along its entire length. Currently the majority of those in rotation right now are in an extended pile surrounding my keyboard.

I mostly use these cases instead of traditional racks. I have various racks, but these sunglass cases are fantastic and hold 18 pipes, even larger ones.

Part of an old wooden dish dryer, used as pipe rack.
Yep, that's the case. I have 6 of them and stack them on top of each other with the lid closed. It protects the pipes and also keeps them out of direct sunlight. You can also flip the lid over and set them out flat on a table or prop the lid and use as a display like shown in the picture.

Do you sort by brand, by type of tobacco that gets used in the pipes, shape, etc.?
My pipe racks are constructed between studs on the right and left side a door in utility room. My wife installed some green cloth to showcase the pipes. The left side holds bent pipes, with shelves that hold the pipes. The right side is for straight pipes. I simply installed a 1'' x 1" with a 1/2" holes for the pipes. I like the way it looks and handles almost all pipes and pipe stuff.

Wrong era & everything, but pretty handy (one of two ex display I got super cheap from eBay). I keep them in a cupboard so out of direct sunlight.

You can buy a box of canning jar and use a knife to carve an elegant pipe rack like this if it tickle your fancy ?
