You can look to see who is online at any given time. The online list shows member names and the number of lurkers or bots viewing the site.

Usually, the lurkers dwarf the members. So you never know who is watching you, taking suggestions, or viewing your digital footprint.

I think I lurked for a few months and then decided for some strange reason "yes, this is my place". And then I never left.

I tend to socialize with thick skin grown men in all facets of my life. This forum is the only forum that I belong to. I work nights and get lots of screentime. I enjoy the banter and the knowledge of current tobaccos. I lurked for a while and my first impression of some of you was that you are a bunch of pretentious a$$holes. The longer I lurked the more I realized just how wrong I was. None of you are really pretentious.....

I would hope they're thoroughly disgusted by us all. If not, we're not doing a good enough job, and should hang our heads in shame. But please remove the pipe first before doing that, I can't be held financially liable for such things.

I, on the other hand do wonder about some of the Lurkers.
Only this morning I read a thread, which had already attracted many replies, the OP was asking what pipe he should buy, etc. for $300. His first post.
He'd received many replies, but had never responded to any.

I think its kind of disrespectful that you get people on the forums, their first post is what to buy, which pipe, what tobacco, etc. basically, give me all your knowledge, without a solitary "how do you do?"

Should there be a thing in place that the Lurker has to have at least introduced himself?
Or am I placing too much on good manners, or put another way. Am I too much of a curmudgeonly old bastard?

Oh I certainly am pretentious. I just try not push it on anyone or think it makes me anything otherwise then a bit weird. .

Sometimes there's a lot less. It's 9:45 am UK time and there's only 19 members online at the moment. That's because all the Americans have no staying power and are fast asleep.

As someone who lurked for quite a while before making an account I can't be more grateful for the multiple lifetimes worth of education the regular posters have contributed. I'd say there is a fair amount of lurkers like myself who are working through the archives on any topic they want to know more about. I think the regular posters might not grasp the sheet quantity of material there is available here .

I did the same thing before I joined. I went through the archives and found that most of the questions I had had been asked and answered many times over

I don't mind that many of these lurkers basically watch us like a sitcom, actually, maybe we could use this thread to become more entertaining by developing new plot lines, forum romances and even add some catch phrases like whatacha talkin about Warren? or everytime @anotherbob enters a thread someone could say anotherbob, where are your pants?! (audience laughs)
