"My personal favorite is a reprint of the 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language by Noah Webster."
I too have a copy of that bound in red cloth. I also have the two volume Webster's New International (2nd edition) unabridged which is actually a much better dictionary than the 1961 three volume third edition!
"Modern dictionaries would lead to improper understandings."
Not so with the full OED. Being a dictionary based on historical principles, it gives every known meaning (and spelling) of all words. The simple word 'set' runs to several pages!
Regards,
Jay.

It sounds like you've got quite the Set up. I was proud to finally obtain a copy of Black's Law Dictionary 4th edition which actually cites Supreme Court cases, another gem I have in hard back is The Brill Dictionary of Gnosis & Western Esotericism. These types of dictionaries are more specialized and encyclopedic. The OED is of interest, but I prefer to understand words in American as opposed to English.

I have been thinking about this question. Other than my own art, I mostly collect disgust. Disgust with the government, primarily. Also disgust with the media, with the art world, with hateful and murderous groups and people. Overall, disgust with humanity.

I collect books... But, not just any books. Holy books from across the world. I always thought it was important to read about a culture so harsh judgements aren't made on said cultures.
My favorite book is my first book, my Tanakh from my Bar-Mitzvah.

This is the front cover. Do note, the book, for English speaking countries, is considered backwards. But, for those who don't know, Hebrew is read from right to left, not left to right.

My little sticker recognizing me for my Bar-Mitzvah.
I've treasured this thing for years, and I plan on doing so furthermore.

While I cannot call them collections, I do have thing that I tend to hang onto.
I have acquired a fair bit of wine for a very light wine drinker. I keep them around for visitors, mostly.
20161027_0428511-337x600.jpg

And in recent years I have begun to pick up vinyl albums. I have quite a few, and will post a picture later.
And finally, the books. I have a lot of books. Some I have for my future classroom. These include Young Adult titles and classics that will be in my library in the room for my students. Still others are for my own professional interest. English methods books are an excuse to buy more books. lol. I also intend to get endorsed in history and as I squeeze in the stray history class in here and there I buy more and more history books. Others my wife and I pick up because they are cool and old. She has some from the 1870's that she was very proud of... until I showed her my 3 volume set from 1848. I need to get the spines cleaned, as they are from Whatcom Counties first library and they wrote the numbers on the spine in permanent ink. grr. Otherwise they are in terrific shape. I also have a 20 volume set (plus index)set of Young Folks Library readers from 1902. Pictures forthcoming.

I'm envious of your wine collection. I can't legally buy it yet, so I mooch off of my parents for a glass or two.

I am also a fan of Holy Books Vokaa. I do not have a Tanakh, and feel my Jewish collection of books is generally poorly represented. Most of what I want is only available in Hebrew, which I cannot read. Even specific years of publication can offer differences that I desire over others.
Since you are interested in Holy Books of the world, here is a link to a project that has not yet been finished. Maybe before long it will be.

Oh my, I'll have to sit down and read all of that some day soon.
For any Jewish book, JPS makes a great Tanakh. If you ever want, message me and I can send you one of my spare Tanakhs! For a Torah though, I recommend an Etz Hayim. It's the conservative version of the Torah, great for people interested in the religion.

Very kind of you. I may take you up on that in the future. Thanks, and thanks for the recommendation.

Speaking of Hebrew books, I have a Biblia Hebraica, a Hebrew-English lexicon, and several serious grammars (Gesenius etc). They are all pretty thick and take up quite a bit of shelf room. They are all refugees from my theology degree many years ago. With my retirement upcoming I am anxious to get rid of them. They are too heavy to post, but it would be disrespectful to just toss them, so I am in a quandary.

Don't toss them. There are are probably local organizations that sell books for charities, even public libraries do sometimes. Do you have Craigs list? Newspapers, and even facebook have ways to advertise to local people as well. Some used book stores will take books and give you store credit, small amounts of cash, or will take them with no compensation and donate them to a charity.

brightleaf - thanks for your response. I actually have no intention of just 'tossing' them. It wouldn't seem right to me to throw into the rubbish the sacred text of someone's faith. It doesn't matter whether I share that faith or not, it comes down to being a matter of respect for something someone finds holy. I wouldn't do it.
I do have solution though - in a couple of weeks we have a student from one of the London theological colleges coming to conduct a service. I will give them all to him to present to the college library or, possibly, to give to a student who is a little short of funds.

Ya know... I've been contemplating a degree in Religious Studies, mainly the psychological aspect and sociological aspect. I've been looking at different Hebrew texts (luckily I can read Hebrew from years of study). Anyone who gets those books will be very lucky!

The decision to destroy books isn't one that I find easy. I have trashed books before and the memory has always stayed with me. I think there may be some bad karma, or something similar associated with it.

Your plan seems like a good one.
Vokaa the field of study your are considering has some career potential, but mainly in a military capacity. You can always pursue your studies at home without having to pay someone to validate that you studied.

In addition to pipes and tobacco I collect postage stamps (Revenues, Precancels, and South Korea), leather Bibles, and theology books.

Oh, don't worry, I know... Which is sad, but it is what it is.
I'm looking at more of a psychology career so I can make up an excuse to take some classes regarding religion for my own giggles. We shall see, though.
postage stamps
Ooo! Could you show your favorite one? I love postage stamps, I own an old red wagon stamp my father gave me.

Fishing equipment, I have 8 fly rods and about 30 conventional rod and reel combos. Antique cook books, I've slacked on acquiring these in the last few years. I have a small collection of cocktail shakers squirreled away somewhere in the garage.
Since both of my boys are in 4-H we have a growing chicken and rabbit collection as well. 5 chickens and 3 rabbits but one of the females should be pregnant so...

When I began collecting kids (mine and a few through adoption), my collecting of things ended but I still have a massive library that would put many small town libraries to shame and most public school science libraries to shame. I still collect natural history books and especially 1st editions. Some are rather rare and most I inherited. Sadly, these days they sit in safety deposit boxes and cold storage facilities.
