I believe that is exactly correct!Given the gaps on this pipe, it may not be as evenly dense as a "typical" Meerschaum—maybe it did colour naturally and the smoke and juices penetrated more easily through the porous sections that are dark?

It's where you hold it. Look at the heel on this one.Bowl 36.
I don't understand what's happening on the sides around the holes. My other meers always color here too pretty quick, but this is just strange to me. If it were finger dirt, it would be black. I know. But this is just strange to me as I've not smoked a lattice this far before. It's just so different than the color of the shank.

This is also why I love doing this. Watching how things change.
and 3 posts later you are asking why the color (where your thumb and finger are touching the pipe) are a different color LOL
That's what I was thinking too, it's always where my fingers are. So you hold that one on the heel???
You didn't buy the white cotton gloves? That's what I was thinking too, it's always where my fingers are. So you hold that one on the heel???
But if the color comes from the outside, wouldn't the spot where you hold it, NOT color, because it's being covered up?and 3 posts later you are asking why the color (where your thumb and finger are touching the pipe) are a different color LOL
I don't think anyone actually uses those. You didn't buy the white cotton gloves?
Shhhhhhhh-ut up ... let's see if he buys them....I don't think anyone actually uses those.
There definetly is better airflow, but I had to file some of the tenon hole, due to excess material. And the connection is much sturdier than the screw in ones. Those always worry me how they wobble. How are you finding the Altinay smokes vs your other meers with the screw in push pull tenons?
Usually index finger around the bottom of the bowl with my thumb on the heel to balance it. Guess how I hold this one.
