I just used a wet paper towel.I give any new Pete about a 60 sec hot water flush, then ream them out with a paper towel. Most of the coating comes right off.
Here’s my Hudson before it’s first smoke.

That always happens with a new Pete. Whatever carbon coating they use, it's like a Yello-Bole, because it sticks to it instantly. One smoke and broken in.The chamber coating was bizarre as well. Tobacco stuck to it like glue while smoking. Fixed that.?

Not something I do so no.Did any excess stain come off with the hot water flush for anyone?
Good news! Piss poor drilling is not considered a defect…
You have the worst luck with Petersons! Before this one, I bought five new ones in the last year, all were drilled dead center.I see they added more Christmas pipes today... Based on my experience I won't be ordering a replacement, since I'll probably just end up getting another poorly drilled piece of junk.
With some of the issues I've read about here and on other forums, I think the whole concept this year was nothing more than a cash grab. With pipes rushed through the process and haphazardly made.
Maybe blow my money on China made pipes... at least they're drilled correctly.
Well, this year I have. Prior to that, all the new Petersons I bought were drilled well. I've returned 5 this year, ranging in price from $100 to $400. It's just a real pisser that they can't drill these with any consistency lately. I thought the 2018 takeover by Laudisi was supposed to bring some better quality to the marque. You have the worst luck with Petersons! I've had the same quality issue with another company.?But that doesn't mean much when it's drilled like a basket pipe.
Due to the near lack of a button on my Strand, that's what I'm going to do with it.This would make a lovely Christmas ornament
My Milverton looks the same…I’ve ordered half a dozen Petersons online and none have had good drilling. I was hoping this would be the exception and I think the pictures will speak for themselves.

This would make a lovely Christmas ornament but has a long way to go to being a good smoker.
I agree with everything that you’ve said except for the "you’ve been had" part. It's clear that they have a certain standard. The question is: is that a standard that’s acceptable? My Milverton looks the same…
I think these Christmas pipes were meant to be decorations. The way they’re drilled they remind of the pipes that are sold to tourists at gift shops.
Over the years I’ve bought Petersons where the drilling was slightly off, but nowhere near as bad as what I’ve seen with this series.
Problem is is that plenty of people are willing to accept this poor workmanship, and the manufacturer just seems to turn a blind eye. Too bad, so sad, we’ve got your money, and you’ve been had…
Maybe I should take the crappy Petes and make a mobile out of them... A modern art masterpiece. Opening bids start at $20,000.Due to the near lack of a button on my Strand, that's what I'm going to do with it.
