I've had a Paypal account for around 20 years. In the last month I've done a couple larger than usual transactions (by no means very large) and just had my account restricted. I find this totally ludicrous. They didn't even send me an email, I only found out while I tried to purchase something which I was unable to, so I logged in to see what was up. I had to submit all sorts of information in the hopes to eventually being able to access my funds. When it comes to the banking system good luck if you ever have an issue as you have little or no power over the situation and being a long standing customer means nothing.

Sorry this happened to you. I've never had issues thankfully. The big boys don't usually givaf which is really the unfortunate aspect of these situations. I only use the service as a transfer of funds, I don't hold funds in PP

I've never had this issue, but have heard of similar problems, including with Pipestud recently in which they restricted his account due to tobacco and he ended up hobbled for weeks and weeks while his attorney got it sorted out.

PP used to be the only game in town, but no longer. Instead of staying competitive, stories like this make it seem like they're trying to squeeze out every last drop of profit before they get eclipsed by a competitor.

Once these organizations get established, they develop a lordly attitude and the poor little customer can just hope for the best. I won't use paypal nor other similar systems. If I saw a pipe on Forums, I'd have to send a PM to the seller and ask if I could send him a check and he'd send me the pipe once it cleared. All these outfits develop a dossier on you, and you have little recourse or control. Sometimes, it is not even their mal intent. They just can control their own red tape.

Oh they started like that to be honest. In part because of protecting themselves from liability and also just founders preferences. For example he's against tobacco so that's a no no, but also if some kid uses paypal to buy cigs then they may get dragged into the stupidity. Not just from a legal stand point, but also from the stand point of being seen as a service specifically for that stuff. Look at craigslist. Mainly people selling crap locally but many people still see it as a network for sex and drugs. I guess what I am saying is I never liked paypal much but those issues really stand out when they become one of the standards for buying things online.

Don't you pretty knowingly hand over control of your account when you agree to the conditions. That's the main reason I do not use on-line payment programs. I prefer that I determine when to spend and how much to spend. So, I never deal with Pay-Pal only retailers.

exactly, we'd all better get used to this - Capitalism is going down the toilet- I swear it's going to get to a point when casual forum conversation is going to get political no matter how much restraint is employed - The state of Free Markets is in severe distress

It's been slowly veering that way - Ebay has done this and I no longer use 'em

I use PP on most transactions especially international ones.I use it for all my SP tobacco orders.
I can remember what it was like before PP.I once bought an expensive handmade instrument from a US luthier who lived in the middle of nowhere what a pain that was trying to get the money to him.

Most of my PayPal activity was through eBay, but now eBay makes checking out a little smoother by using your cc directly through eBay. The only issue I ever had with them was paying a pipe maker once and they took a week to send him the money. It was weird and they didn't even send him a confirmation email. That was a one-time hiccup though and haven't had any other issues with them. I don't appreciate the company's politics so I'm not looking to find ways to use them more, but I can't honestly slag them or their service too bad, either.

Your bank CC should be secure against fraudulent use. PP cannot steal money .

PayPal can certainly hold your money, nearly indefinitely, over their arbitrary reasons. It's well documented. I can't touch the money I have in there at the moment as they review the information I gave them.

During covid I had a relative who had a fraudulent PP account opened under their name which was slowly draining their bank account over a month. Neither PP or their bank found this sudden activity suspicious yet after having an account for 20 or more years they decided to suddenly restrict mine due to a couple payments that were higher than my average.
