Most types of mold prefer environments with a pH of 2 to 6, though 4 to 6 is better. Mildly acidic.I think you mean that it doesn’t like acidic environments.
From what I've read on here SWRA is still good to go.Thought I would add my own testimonial. I smoked some of the new stuff today and yup .. it is vile. I hope the aromatic isn't ruined as well.
I just had a bowl of Granger and it's still good, significantly better than SWR...which is weird because I thought they were basically the same blend with different packaging. From what I've read on here SWRA is still good to go.
Never been close to the same for me.I just had a bowl of Granger and it's still good, significantly better than SWR...which is weird because I thought they were basically the same blend with different packaging.
I've had the pleasure of only smoking one pouch of the old production SWR. What they have on the market now is nowhere close to what it was.I just had a bowl of Granger and it's still good, significantly better than SWR...which is weird because I thought they were basically the same blend with different packaging.
Agreed. It's only fair, how many English Hamlets have played the stage?I'm not surprised that there is a Danish Sir Walter Raleigh. Many years ago I attended a performance of King Lear featuring Denmark's greatest Lear. If we can have Danish Lear, why not Danish Sir Walter Raleigh?
If it were me, I'd buy all three, but that's just me, I really enjoy the old SRW. Obviously not a hot seller at your grocery.A local grocer still has 3 of so USA made Tucker GA 14oz tubs for $40 or so.
I might just do that, I am worried they'll get rid of the pipe tobacco, they did that at the one closest to me. They had introduced self checkouts and only now have a small selection of dip cigs and cigars, and no more pipe tobacco or dry snuff. If it were me, I'd buy all three, but that's just me, I really enjoy the old SRW. Obviously not a hot seller at your grocery.
Just a thought....You might try buying all 3 for $100.My experience with SWR has been interesting. When I started Piping in 2023 I got 2 pouches made in 2021, and they were fine. Not a whiff of vinegar. Fast forward to last year, went to the same brick and mortar store and got a pouch, and it has the exact same code as the ones I got in 2023 (I kept those pouches) Opened it up and it was obviously way more dried than it was supposed to be, and reeked of vinegar. Tasted it too. I've had it airing out for close to a year now in a non airtight jar but it still smells of vinegar. I may try to smoke a bowl now but I don't think there's any saving it.
Makes no sense, but I won't be buying it again. A local grocer still has 3 of so USA made Tucker GA 14oz tubs for $40 or so, have been meaning to buy one.

Good job. Thank you for that. It really boggles my mind how bad it is. It's not just a hint of vinegar, it's an absolute bath that burns the nostrils. I'm not one to waste tobacco but I had to toss the bowl pack.I raised the SWR vinegar complaint to STG a couple weeks ago and received a canned corporate response. I mentioned it to Leonard W. (STG) when he was on these Forums to explain the Sutliff debacle and he said he was aware of the complaints and had referred the matter to their QC team.
This is the worst take you’ve ever had. They may not have changed the formula, but they certainly could screw it up easily by trying to cut corners. It cost a whole lot of money to set up a factory in Denmark to produce SWR.
Scandinavian didn’t become the largest pipe tobacco maker on earth by stupidity. They can smell the vinegar.
They can’t legally change the pre 2007 formula, without trouble with the FDA.
It’s better. They’ve aged the tobaccos until they fermented more. Like the original process called for.
