There was a time when I was considered hipster, more of a punk rock hipster. I'm 30 now and a parent I care so little about trends now is unbelievable, and I wear Merrells and socks in my saddles. I'm either painfully uncool or way ahead of my time, trend setter maybe lol

We used to have a member who posed the supposition that hipsters hated normalcy and it was a political philosophy in tangible form; attire, props, style, etc.... Of sorts... Which was ironic, because he was a fan of music about hatred of normalcy and anything good, called deathmetal. But, I digress...

I don't think everyone who dons a pair of Buddy Holly glasses, 70's thriftstore garb, and choses to listen to obscure bands has the same political reasons for doing so. Sometimes people just emulate the styles that they are attracted to, having no general disregard for the well being of the rest of humanity.

I am not sure where the animosity of this particular counter culture comes from as opposed to the acceptance of bikers, metalheads, rednecks, or any of the other counter cultures. I suppose that making fun of a counter culture like bikers or rednecks would lead to more aggressive responses, making hipsters just an easier target to make fun of. I suppose, I suppose.... It is good to have someone we can make fun of. puffy

I have some hipster friends. The thing is, they don't consider themselves hipsters. Hipster is not a culture. It's a term used by "us" to describe "them". Us being everyone off the trend wheel.
Now these guys, they are always wearing something cool and donning interesting hair and beards, and they always engage in cool hobbies 100%. Even to the point of turning up at parties with rucksacks full of small samples of esoteric whiskies, correctly shaped glases and pipettes for dropping water in and everything and oozing with enthusiasm and hipness.
They are very entertaining.

I liked Deathmetal. He had a tobacco review about which blend would be most appropriate for when he was going to grill and cannibalize his annoying neighbours.
Maybe that was what got him thrown out, I don't know, but it was funny. And weird. I like that.

So, I like to smoke a pipe, I like classic menswear, I wear a handlebar moustache in the fall.... I do it cuz I like those things.. I have been accused of being a hipster... but being 50 I seriously doubt thats the case. On the converse, I have a wife and kid, I go to church and volunteer there constantly, I play the bass in the church worship team, I carry a gun, and I live on a farm... Rush is my band.... I like craft gins and rye whiskey.. Hipster? who the heck knows..

I liked Deathmetal.
I did too. We swapped blends and had a running set of dialogs and inside jokes. But, when he would start in on how hipsters are anti-normalcy, I always tried to point out his fascination with music that was full of anti_noramlcy. His music wasn't my thing, but we got along on a human level, and became very good friends. I am not sure what led to his banning, but I do miss his kurt sense of humor and predictable comments. It was always a breath of fresh air to see his passions for Royal Yacht.

I had just started here when he disappeared. I can't recall if he loved or hated Royal Yacht. Either way, it was funny.
He was a personality, also in writing, which isn't easy.

Love would not be a strong enough word for his attachment to RY. It would be best described by his comment that (paraphrasing) "the Earth would be nothing but a burned out cinder spinning in space if there was no RY."

As for "normalcy", there has been a conspicuous absence of discussions on the virtues of cannibalism, bestiality and Nietzsche around here since his departure.
