I have numerous colored and multi colored stems. When coordinated correctly, they really add to the pipe.
Just always remember, a thing my daughter learned while camping... you cannot charge up a glow in the dark Frisbee with a campfire, ha ha.
What about flashlights? Simply curious. Has to do with light waves' band, I suppose.
In my day all we had were black vulcanite stems, and we LIKED IT!!!
Some are OK, some are fugly. And some of the pipes they're attached to are fugly as hell too.
I've the orange stems on cobs. They're alright, for a cob.
My main issue with colour is that some draw too much attention, but in some instances, if done right they do make the pipe look more elegant.

Yes, because the one thing a pipesmoking stuffed bear doesn't want... is drawing attention to themselves. Ha ha.
There's vintage bakelite stems and rod stock that also says it's nothing new.
Latley I'm only buying pipes with colored stems. I love a little flash. 
For me it depends on the pipe. Some multi colored stems really match the wood grains and make the pipe “pop” if you will.
Wow I never knew vulcanite came in any other color but black. Maybe my Jared Coles really does have a vulcanite stem, it’s red and black swirl so I thought it was acrylic lol.
Is there an easy way to tell what material a stem is made from?
Rub it with your thumb until it's warm. If it smells like hot rubber it's vulcanite.
That’s a great example lmao. Amazing that the carver stained each section of grain a different color.
Just looked him up. It appears that he mostly uses vulcanite.
The world of tobacco and pipe design is vast and varied! To each their own, but I tend to agree that a black vulcanite or some sort of wood stem just looks and feels "classic pipe" to me.
Bruce Weaver called them pipeadelic. He was nuts for the puzzle work involving multi piece stems.
