This is my latest clay acquisition. Haven't tested it out yet though.
Need two; one to smoke and keep the other pristine!

@coming to_falling too Any more information on this pipe - I really like it! I'd smoke that long stemmed clay pipe but I'd probably end up breaking it...View attachment 149962

While reading your posts I'm thinking why not just buy yourself a couple of MM cobs?yeah but in a cigarette or RMO it's not really the same.. the humidity is kind of essential, that's why people dont like stale cigarettes I guess.
But in a pipe it's probably different because it's packed more.. I bet American Spirit would be nice in a pipe, inhaled, but I dont know about taking out the humidity, especially if I want to inhale it. tbh I would not use a clay pipe. I'd use these unglazed jade ones I'm used to. Very small bowl though.
maybe I can try inhaling from a clay pipe though... it's just maybe not as desirable. Maybe the black ones are better for that.. since they have been colored with Woodsmoke.
From a briar it might be good.
Yes it is an Old German Clay tavern cutty shape 47 I believe. I got it from P&C (pipes and cigars). 25 dollars. I didn't see any of these long stem shapes on SP which I find odd.@coming to_falling too Any more information on this pipe - I really like it! I've not much experience with clay pipes, but could you elaborate on the pipe cleaners not being an option?I smoked nothing but clays until my 20s. I still have the pipe notches in my teeth to prove the point! During the Victorian period shag tobacco was smoked in clay pipes and survivors of the era are brands like Golden Virginia before it became popular for RYO. Whilst YMMV I found that hand cut tobacco like G&H Twist or any of the plugs or flakes if prepared properly will allow you to live in peace with your clay pipe. The bowls get very hot and hence why you hold the pipe by the stem. Pipe cleaners are not an option although I used to break the things before that became an issue. If you are buying clays you might want to tip the end of the stem to stop your lips sticking to the clay and reduce your risk of lip cancer. Enjoy your journey but do try something other than RYO tobacco, your tongue will love you if you do!
@condorlover1 I haven't got any pipe notches; I never clench my clays. I like to smoke them at re-enactments and I find churchyards are a good place for a beer?, a pipe and quiet contemplation...I smoked nothing but clays until my 20s. Nice draw. This other one had too small a hole but a really nice design I prefer, but I can work up to that maybe.

Good point. I started out with cobs, having the same gurgling issues. but now I know to just smoke dry. And yeah, but I dunno, because they use glue on the cobs. But it was good to start out with, it is a very natural smoke, except minus some tastes what I thought was that glue...While reading your posts I'm thinking why not just buy yourself a couple of MM cobs?
I'd predict that half your issues with smoking a pipe would disappear.
My clay pipes are used just to give me a true impression of a new blend.
Although I like clays they do have drawbacks - like not all will take a pipe cleaner for example.
Not sure why you're persevering with clays since they're causing you so many issues.
Missouri Meerschaum also sells a hardwood pipe that are really cheap. I've not got one myself but I've read many good reports [some even say they're their best smoker]
If you smoke RYO for the nic-hit, I'd recommend that you get a blend with a reasonable level of Vit N and smoke it in a small bowled briar or MM hardwood.
Personally I only smoke blends with mild nicotine since getting off a serious cigarette addiction so you'll need to ask others for recommendations.
yeah I kinda imagined that clay pipes were like the cigarette before cigarettes.. and even then this one clay pipe factory supposedly went out of business because it was replaced by the popularity of cigarettes. You can even hold it like a cigarette, if you are careful. It is also white in color like a cigarette.I smoked nothing but clays until my 20s. I've got five MM cobs in regular rotation and have not ever tasted "glue".I started out with cobs, having the same gurgling issues. but now I know to just smoke dry. so yeah I just like that the clays are all one piece, the stem and the bowl, etc.
well living in the subtropics, I guess it would be.I've got five MM cobs in regular rotation and have not ever tasted "glue".
The culprit there would be the tobacco you're smoking [or maybe if you caught the China virus your tastebuds could be the cause of bad or odd taste]
Lifes too short to tolerate a pipe that gurgles - I've two pipes that need a pipe cleaner half way through a bowl so they're not in my rotation.
Both are bent pipes which are more likely to gurgle than a straight pipe.
None of the blends that I smoke are overly moist [I hate paying for excessive moisture] so I don't need to dry my tobacco.
Sorry if it's already been mentioned but do you live in a humid environment? If yes then that would be the most likely cause of gurgling issues.
