Yeah so I dont know about these clay pipes really being for long smokes.. because it gets too hot. And I'm following the rule now "if it gets too hot to hold touching the cheek for 5 seconds, it's too hot"

but that is for Briars.

Maybe eventually I can get into those, unfinished ones, with a vulcanite stem if I can learn how to take care of it. but another thing also is I dont want to use those filters.... and to wax the vulcanite.. id want to use only natural materials... So, that's gonna take some figuring out. Toothpaste and/or oxyclean can help to clean them, I read, and just normal lip balm and I dont need the Obsidian Oil? Also, I would not clench them either just like the Clay pipes to preserve them ... and maybe set a special place to put it in case the stem leaves a little oily residue or whatnot. Whatever. who knows if I'll ever get into that.

Edit: yeah just One light in these clay pipes and it gets too hot. Hm. And that's what builds carbon. But I was told building carbon in these pipes are not good, But if another said that it is a myth they dont require breaking in, it's because they are building Carbon right? So then maybe there is a safe way to build carbon ie letting it get too hot?

I think spending some time with a clay pipe smoking American Spirit could teach me something ... since maybe I dont need to smoke it too long. I can only see this pipe being good for that, and /or stronger tobaccos where if I take only a few puffs I'm good. But for the longer smoke? yeah that takes some major skillz, and like I said you're probably making carbon. Unless uhh, it's because I'm smoking dryer stuff? Maybe more humid stuff smokes cooler also, but I dont think it changes that much. We'll see.

I first need to learn how to smoke it without building Carbon, and that happens when it gets too hot. I saw that Immediately once it got too hot.

Also I guess it depends on when I want to empty the bowl.. It seems when the bowl gets too small it gets hotter. So you might want to refill it at that point. After doing the recommended cooling.

instead of slow maybe try sipping the pipe. :)
I was thinking of having one pipe just for American Spirit tobacco to inhale. Well, first I have to see if any of these pipes are really enjoyable inhaling...

I know that's probably not what you meant by sipping. I guess I dont know what you mean by sipping? Does that mean long slow draws (which I've been doing all this time).... Or is it those short puffs ?

also this might be obvious but if the pipebowl gets too hot then it might burn the tongue. but i guess it can be alleviated somewhat by keeping a wad of saliva in your mouth... if you can handle it.

but even then i see no good point in letting it get too hot.. and it's way too easy for that. So I dont know if people just have some special skills in breaking in wooden bowls that they apply to these pipes (even for cobs), because have all given me gurgling issues.... Unless that is an issue separate from breaking in a pipe.

yeah it gets too hot after one relight. And there's nothing wrong with relighting huh? but it also risks getting too much lighter fluid contaminating the bowl probably.. by too many lights. or leaving a black mark. And soon after relighting, just one good puff and boom, it's too hot.

Maybe those black clay pipes might be better for inhaling... I dont know. Maybe they burn cooler. Also according to one website "Carved bowl finish" may lead to a cooler smoke but not necessarily... And I dont know what carved vs smooth bowl finish means either.

like you would take a sip of whiskey. Slow and shortish. Nifty trick put a burning pipe in your mouth like you're smoking it. Don't draw on it at all. After a short time take the pipe out and see how much smoke got in your mouth with zero effort. That will give you a good idea of what I mean by a sip. Barely assist the drawing of the smoke. Just enough to keep it smoldering. I personally think slow gives people the wrong idea by not stating one of the most key points. That point being how hard one draws is as important as the rate or frequency of the draw.

Argh. I have to wait for my next pipe tho because today... I received it, but it got ruined due to an incident. This is like my third this month. Third Authentic one anyways.. but I didn't like the packaging. It came with a card inside... and it was bubble wrap was glued. W/e.. it smoked OK though.

Bad luck this month. I can't try clay pipes anymore until next month it seems.. and if I am able to smoke from the next clay pipes Im getting soon, then it'll be a miracle.

Its just.. I've been having so many problems with lighters. Lol... so I have to wait until I get a proper lighter next month.

I mean I'll have a lighter but.. I was wanting to try the specific pipe lighter..

yeah I think the only answer is to smoke dry stuff... because getting too hot can never be prevented. But then again I'm going by the rule "dont let the bowl get too hot that you cant hold it against the cheek"...

but that suggestion is not for clay pipes though. So who knows. If I have dry stuff then I can smoke it as hot as I want to?

If your smoking RYO, as youve said, its dry enough out of the bag. With clay pipes the bowl will get hot no matter what, so your hold it by the stem. Just take a draw enough to keep it lit and as long as your tongue or moith doesn’t hurt, youll be fine. Don’t worry about the bowl getting too hot at this point i’d suggest. Just focus on smoking at a cadence that doesn’t burn your mouth/tongue.

@TheSt0rm have you seen the clay pipes on SPC from Markus Fohr?

I had the Twine-Banded Churchwarden from him, really nice smoking pipe.

He use to have a website, here’s a Twitter acocunt;

His family has been making clay pipes for a few generations in Germany. I’m no clay expert, but he seems to be one of the better makers, from my understanding.

But uh, maybe salt water is OK. I would probably rinse it off though because I wouldn't want to be smoking salt...
You won't inhale salt. It won't even melt until 1,474F (which is hard on your pipe).
There is a recent phenomenon where salt is smoked in a smoker (like BBQ, jerkey, fish, latakia, etc...). I suppose you'll be doing this on a small scale in your pipe, and you may invent something wonderful!

You got me all excited for clays again, of course our resident Clay man @halfdan always inspires me when I see him puffing the clays.

So I will certainly grab a Markus Fohr clay, especially for testing new blends out, which I think is a great idea. I know a lot say MM Cobs too are great for the purposes of testing, which I’ve always used, not to mention being good smokers.

But now I’ll test in clay toos.

This one has my eyes;

Do you buy your Clays locally?
@PipeIT I bought one from Appleyards in Buxton, a handmade one from a trader at the Redcoats & Revolutionaries re-enactment and have bought them from flea markets & antique shops. Some of mine came from eBay and Smokingpipes.com while I got some others from Pipes Magazine forum members.
Unfortunately my local tobacconist in Chesterfield doesn't carry clay pipes and I think it's a shame Wilson's of Sharrow (just down the road from me in Sheffield) stopped making them about 10 years ago. They have the old Pollock moulds; if they still made clay pipes I'd probably be their biggest customer!
