If you need refills of the Standard Tobacco blends, just let me know.

Well if that's the case, then I'm going to dig in to a couple of these!
War Horse
The first time I tried this tobacco (July last year) I thought the topping tasted a little of licorice. This time, it reminds me a little of cherry. In any case, the topping goes really well with the earthy burley.
I don't detect much perique. Usually perique makes retrohales a little sharp for me; this is quite smooth.
I wouldn't rate the nicotine past medium. It burns very well and doesn't require much attention.
Easy to smoke and very tasty!

So try to figure this one out by reading tobaccoreviews.com:
"Little to offer in the way of flavor" and "It is bland", vs. "Just flavor, and lots of it".

"Flavors are rich, deep and spicy" vs. "Flavors are smooth and natural, with no spiciness"
"Too bitter" vs. "No bitterness"
"There was never much nicotine" vs. "Extremely satisfying in terms of nicotine"
"Bites and burns hot" vs. "Smooth with no bite or harshness"
My take? Burns well, very little flavour (or very subtle), and nothing "special" about it.

The discovery of those blends has been my favorite experience with this box pass so far, well, besides the camaraderie of course.
Also, Yaddy, your reviews have been great! There's so many blends in that box now that it's good to hear some reviews ahead of receiving the box.

Thanks, drezz!

Very unique. Char, burnt caramel, that smell when you're cooking rice on the stove and it boils over onto the ring. Not smoky, but charcoal. Not much tobacco taste left underneath.
Oh, and lots of nicotine.

Good to hear! I'll try to get it into the mail tomorrow.
yaddy were you able to put a big dent in the box?
Unfortunately, no.

About an ounce of Stonehaven, a couple of plastic folding pipe stands, the last of the 2020 Mature Cakeand a little Sweet Coconut Twist are coming out of the box. Oh, and the tin of Red Ribbon fell onto the floor, so it'll be coming out...
I'm putting full tins of Frog Morton, Drew Estate Meat Pie, and University Flake in. Plus some Sutliff Voodoo Queen and C&D Bayou Morning. Hopefully people will enjoy those!
If you need refills of the Standard Tobacco blends, just let me know.
Dan, if you're still following this thread, the Bengal Slices and John Cotton #1 are getting a little low, like about three bowls of each left. Quite a bit of Smyrna still.

Nice! Meat Pie is a blend that I really like, have several tins in the cellar. I've heard much good about the other blends you're adding but haven't tried any of them yet. Looking forward to giving them a go.
Hope you had fun with the box. :puffy:

Hey guys, I start to drool just thinking about that box. Anyway, have been in and out up and down and lurking around. I just wanted to share a few palette changes over the last 11 months. It has been an interesting eleven months since I started. Last summer the PAD/TAD kicked in way more than I should have let it and I am extremely thankful that my much better half is as understanding and accommodating as she is. Last summer I did the typical new guy thing and bought tobacco and pipes willy-nilly. I purchased some Esoterica blends, Margate and Stonehaven and at the time, thought they were the best tobacco since Borkum Riff. Anyway, as a lot of people have discovered there are lots and lots of outstanding tobacco. I have acquired a lot of different tobacco and have found that my palette, just like it's take on strong coffee, is gravitating toward Lat dominant tobaccos. So here is my take on Penzance, Stonehaven and Margate.

This is just my humble, newbie thoughts and I could be totally out to lunch. Actually I've been out to lunch for a long time now according to my wife, kids and grandkids but what do they know?

Of the three, I prefer Margate. It is a bit sweeter and milder than the Stonehaven and Penzance.

Penzance - Rich, creamy, full and deep flavor. The spicy comes through and the Lat is not dominant. However I have found that it seems to loose flavor the longer it is kept.

Stonehaven - I like the burley Virginia mix that comes through. It is deep, burns very well after a bit of drying and it is smokey and earthy. Not all that sweet.

Margate - All the different bases are covered here. They are well balanced and it gives a very pleasant and all day smoke. I don't think the Latakia is that strong. The orientals really pull through. Smokes dry and cool all the way to the bottom of the bowl. I let all my tobacco dry out for a bit before I load. Nice smokey flavor and great billows of wonderful smoke. The room note is wonderful.

I guess what I am trying to say is that they are great tobaccos, but no longer on my wow list.

Lots of tobaccos out there to try and I know I'll never get to them all before my wife turns me into an egg timer.

So the box now outweighs my "cellar"?
Note to self, you need to buy more tobacco!

shikano53: I would love to see an update of your Wow list! If Margate is still high on one of the other high lists I have to recommend SG Skiff Mixture. Wonderful stuff, similar to Margate but not the same.
I have to say that my tastes have evolved over the two+ years I have been pipe smoking. Staight VA and VA/Pers are making a bigger showing now. I still love trying something new and I am excited to get the box this round. University Flake has always been on my list of ones I want to try but it never makes it into the cart when I buy. Meat Pie also sounds like a treat. and Stonehaven.... well I need to at least try it!

Funny how that happens, oddly I've been loving very subdued tobacco lately. Tilbury usually gets fairly mediocre reviews but it is right in my wheelhouse now.

I am equal parts excited and slightly overwhelmed! I'll do my best to lighten the box but I am also intent on adding some new lesser esoterica blends to share with you fine folk. I'll do my best to smoke through a decent portion - thankfully we finally have the perfect weather for it!

I like Margate, but for some reason I reach for Skiff or Old Dublin much more often. Margate is the only Esoterica I've tried but I'm looking forward to sampling Stonehaven especially.
Other bell ringers lately have been Wessex Brigade Campaign and Germains 1820. Oh, and I'm smoking a fair bit of War Horse too.
I'm sorely lacking on VaPer because I haven't been ordering much baccy lately, and when I have its to shore up supplies of things currently stocked rather than sample new stuff.
fmgee the box is lighter than my cellar but only by a tin or two. Lol
Now to think about what to add when my turn rolls around...

My top tobaccos seem to be in a constant state of flux, however, that being said I will try to sort a few.

Very generous of you guys to add some Esoterica stuff to the box. I've been wanting to see what all the fuss is about but haven't been lucky enough to have my credit card ready any time they are briefly in stock.
