I had the pleasure of trying the Bengal Slices last night in my pocket billiard and, although I didn't spend enough time with it to give a comprehensive review, I thoroughly enjoyed the tobacco! I found it to be a darker, maltier, leathery smoke than I was expecting, though the orientals were really the standout component to me. I found the blend would evolve throughout the top half of the bowl, undulating between the congested, darker notes as mentioned and then suddenly opening up into the sandalwood and mossy notes of the orientals.
The second half of the bowl fell a little flat for me but I would not place the blame on the tobacco - this is an issue I experience with near-every bowl I smoke, regardless of what I've filled my pipe with. I'm still evolving my own technique and cadence; maybe one day I'll get to that fabled 'smokes down to a clean white ash with little dottle or relights' utopia.
Overall I quite enjoyed my first experience with the blend. Although it may not have the body or constitution of some of my favorite lat/orientals (black house for one), I find it to be a more interesting smoke.
All of this has been to say that I will definitely be pinching a little more to enjoy after I send the box on!

I do like that if you break up Bengal slick but leave some good chunks in there you get a really good burn time and an amazing array of flavours coming in and going out and coming back in... very similar to SPC Plum Pudding in that respect.
All of this has been to say that I will definitely be pinching a little more to enjoy after I send the box on!
That is not pinching, it is called resampling and it should be encouraged before the box gets completely out of hand!

Farmer McGee has it right. Leaving some chunks in there does something special. I think that you get more unburnt volatiles as the chunks heat up on the outside and off-gas from the inside. Sounds like me after dinner, i know, but I've observed this phenomena watching large chunks of wood in a fire.

I'm going to have to try the chunky method next time I smoke Bengal Slices.

Is there an estimate on when this blend will be on the store shelves Dan? :puffy:

Bengal Slices is available at P&C now, and I suspect that it is also now available (via their wholesaler) to the other e-tailers. If not today, then soon. I'll check and let you know.

I have a plan. Tonight I am smoking John Cotton's No. 1 and in short order I'm going to smoke a little No. 2. What a luxurious opportunity!
So far the 1 is a very pleasant blend. It's a little on the dry side so I am going to put aside some to rehydrate at a later date for a proper experience, but as it stands I can definitely imagine this being a reacher blend: a blend you just keep reaching for. It's not overly complex or challenging taste wise but is still enticing; it's resisting my attempts to suss out what it is specifically that I like about it, it's just good. Well balanced and satisfying.
I find this with my scotch selection as well. I have a fair selection these days. Some are fairly complex; peated and sherried, double matured et al. Yet sometimes I just reach for the Highland Park 12. It's just well rounded and balanced and a fine scotch experience. Not a peat bomb, not too briney or floral or spicy. No gimmicks or claims, just good fine scotch.

I just got home from work and it is a whopping 9 degrees (Celsius) so I decided to celebrate by trying the 2015 Xmas cheer I grabbed from the box. I have only smoked the 2013 before today. This 2015 is good stuff as well! I have 3 tins in my cellar but have not cracked into any of them yet so this is a treat to try a bowl. I am sitting on the deck with the birds singing, sea lions barking in the distance and the glorious sounds of traffic on the highway down the hill. It almost feels like spring.

9 in the positive?!? Lucky duck. I can't really complain about the winter we've had, mind you, but it's about to take a turn. Luckily I'm headed to Kelowna this afternoon to visit my Brother, Sister in Law, and my 18 month old niece!
I smoked some of the John Cotton 1+2 the other night and I was more impressed by the 1 alone, I may have had a bit of tongue fatigue at the time as I don't typically smoke two bowls in a row. I'll dive back in to it on Tuesday, I'll probably need a nice long bowl after the two-stop flight.

9 in the positive?!?
ahh yep... today was only 5 with a slight breeze.
I tried Golden Day's of Yore from the box today. It is a really interesting blend. Nutty with a mild spicy cooked fruit note. I imagine this blend would only get better some some age on it as it mellows out some of the sharper edges. drezz I recommend filling a bowl and giving it a go.

Quandary - I don't wan't this thread to stagnate so maybe you guys can help me out with a problem.
I feel as I have been sitting on this box for a while since I have been out of town twice now. I think it's about time to send it on but I have come down with a nasty cold (my own fault for entering an airport) so I don't want to get near the thing and risk passing what I have on to any of you.
I could have my roommate package it up and send it out, or, if we aren't in a rush, I could wait it out. Let me know what you think!

You're being over cautious in my opinion, and I work in a hospital. If you have a cold at the moment, you would of had it for probably 2 weeks in it's stage before you got sick, and for about 2 weeks after you have no symptoms you're still capable of passing it on. Unless you're full on blowing snot rags all over the box and contents, people shouldn't be to worried. If they are that worried they can wipe it down using hydrogen peroxide, which kills tuberculosis, before touching any of it's contents. And wear some disposable gloves as well.

yeah drezz, ost things need moisute to survive for long outside of the body. Given the postal times in Canada I doubt anything much would survive after transit. If you are still worried just wash your hands before you handle any parts of the box. Soap is pretty strong stuff!

Hmmmm I swear I've seen a Simpsons episode where an asian lad coughs in to a box causing some sort of epidemic. If a guy can't trust the Simspons, who can he trust?
The box is all packed up and I believe it's heading back East to sw0snuff3r -- are you ready for it?

I prefer well aged scotch, a minimum of 20 minutes out of the still at the very least.
Have any of you guys tried that Irish rope/twist? I'm just curious what you think. Haven't read any comments as I've been lurking around.
