I think that matches also just sell :::period:::
It's sad, but I have seen this happen at The Briary all the time. If you tell someone, "This is unlike anything you've ever had. I'm sure you'll love it" They just look disinterested. But, if you tell them, "That is a lot like Escudo (or whatever)," they buy it.
It's ridiculous that men aren't every adventurous or imaginative, but companies are more likely to lay down some time and money on something more likely to sell than a risk.
Humans think by analogy. Vico characterizes the poetic imagination as one that compares, interpolates as well extrapolates. If we see something that we truly haven't seen before, I suspect we'd be terrified (That's the monolith story in 2001 isn't it?). So, can you blame the customer? There are a bazillion blends out there. I've got over 100 half pint jars of different blends and I'd be hard pressed to describe each uniquely.

There are few guarantees in life, but small batch blends and their haters that don't like being "marketed to" are among them.

Nothing wrong with that of course, to each their own.

Personally I enjoy the chase, the thrill, the whatever you call it that keeps things fresh and interesting.
it is amazing that people could complain about being given options.

Maybe it's because I was born and raised a Mississippi boy but I've been around smokey smells and taste it seems my whole life. Whether it was a wood burning fireplace in the winter, campfires/ bonfires, or some good ole Smoky bbq. Where I'm from just about every gas station has a big smoker outside and bbq joint attached and some great bbq. I remember my first Latakia blend was frog Morton original and I was hooked after that lol couldn't believe how good it was and then Balkan sobrante and others followed after that. If it's not your thing it's just not your thing lol

From one Froggy fan to another, I just wanted to suggest Shepherd's Pie by Country Squire. It's a shop blend, and it's very good. It's a moderate latakia blend along the lines of the original Frog Morton, though without any detectable topping (at least to my palate anyway).

Thanks for the info brother. I'd like to return the favor and suggest my go to Balkan blend which is sutliffs Balkan II. It's sold in bulk, easy on the wallet, and very flavorful. I've probably got at least 20 different english/balkan blends in jars right now that I enjoy but there's always room for more ?

Thanks man. I have not tried that one and will be sure to check it out. I especially like "Balkan" style latakia blends, particularly where the latakia is restrained and orientals are prominent (as an aside, that type of blend is exactly what Shepherd's Pie is).

One of my favorite things about bulk blends is that you can add an ounce to one of your orders for a few bucks just to give it a shot, and if it's not for you, then no big deal.

That was what I was thinking, exactly. Plus... why recreate freakin' Nightcap, when it is still on the market?

@jeremyreeves What's going on here? Why is this one going to wow me!! Give me a reason to give you my money, because I wanna. puffy
Hey Cosmic, I think we kind of said it all in our marketing campaign, as far as what is special or enticing about the blend, from our perspective, and from my perspective. And people seemed to really respond to it. It sold very quickly, and most places found themselves out of stock rather quickly I think. I would recommend checking out reviews that various users on various sites have begun to post, to see what they thought about the blend. So far, this has been very well received. Several people in the last 2 years and change have emailed asking us to make this one again, and From Beyond has gotten consistently high marks from those who have smoked it, both from previous release as well as now.

Other subjects raised in this thread that I thought worth chiming in on:
This is not a Nightcap match, as you suggest, and we never said that it was. Rather, it's a blend that was inspired by a 30+ year old painted top tin of Nightcap, which I had the pleasure of enjoying from my collection. I sought to capture the flavors and aromas of that particular aged tin, using the tobaccos at my disposal. In other words it wasn't about creating Nightcap, it was about capturing the flavor of what this tin of Nightcap had become through it's specific and unique journey of fermentation. That is very different than trying to simply create either the old or the current Nightcap recipe, which would, I agree, be boring and pointless, since the current product is readily available and the old leaf is long gone.

The blend belongs to the Old Ones series because it was the result of an experiment in using current materials to create something that would taste truly aged, which fit well with the themes of things like rifts in time and space, bending time and alternate realities that Lovecraft often wrote about. And thus the blend was called From Beyond, after a Lovecraft story of the same name which deals in these classic Lovecraft themes; The writings of HP Lovecraft have served as the inspiration for the entire Old Ones series.

From Beyond is also a Small Batch because it is a very unique blend, and concept, which cause it to fit nicely into the Small Batch brand, particularly as a release leading into fall. We also thought crossing over the Old Ones and Small Batch played well with the themes of both the crossing realms in the Lovecraft story and the concept of the blend itself attempting to cross time in a way, through flavor.
We changed the color of the label from purple to green because we simply decided to. :)

Welp, for all the statements I made against the "SMALL BATCH SEXY NEW BLEND LIMITED TIME ONLY" thing, I went ahead and added one tin of From Beyond to a TAD order this morning.

I have to give props to @Keitha for his well-stated view that this sort of thing keeps pipe smoking fresh, and that pipe smoking is not just about enjoying the plethora of long-venerated blends, but also trying an interesting one-off just for kicks. As someone who likes Nightcap (and even more, GLP's Quiet Nights), this is up my alley and might be something I'll enjoy. The attempt to match an aged tin of a much-loved blend is a cool idea. I only wish I had a bowl or two of that 1980's Nightcap to compare it to.

Many thanks to Jeremy for explaining the blend and the series origins. Popped the seal on the only tin I ordered a few days back and lit up this morning. It checks all the boxes for a good lat blend to my palate.

This has been an interesting blend. I've only smoked 4 bowls so far and I'm still trying to pick out and identify what exactly I'm tasting. One thing that did surprise me is I was hoping it would be on the stronger side. So far everything has been kinda mild. Gonna have to spend some more time on this one before I can give my 2 cents on it. It's definitely smokeable ?

Yes, ...after the campaign got rolling, but when we first started this discussion, there was only one post from you guys on IG. As, I have said in this thread, I knew you guys would do well. I hope that you are not associating all of the negative stuff said in this thread with me, ha ha.

And, thanks for the clarification on matches. If there is anyone who is more of a CD fanboy on this forum than me, they sure are quiet. I got your back, ha ha.

this sort of thing keeps pipe smoking fresh
Absolutely. If all pipe blends were frozen as they are, and nothing new was hitting the shelves, we'd dry out of new things to talk about fast as hell. I will always be appreciative of small batches. Keep 'em coming!!

Oh, c'mon, we'd keep rehashing the same stuff over and over again! It's not as if we don't do that already. There is nothing new under the sun (the Bible says so!).
This was the first From Beyond thread... ever.
