I’m a bit obsessed with finding another GBD 9664 from the Seventy Six series which was introduced in 1976 in honor of the American Bi-Centennial.

I own one that I have smoked hard for a few years - the nomenclature is getting faint, the GBD rondel has fallen out and there is a spot of super glue on the shank but it is still my favorite pipe. I’ve got a couple of other 9664 but they are from different (lesser) series. My 76er was one of my first decent pipes - I had no idea at the time how much I would come to love it or how difficult it would be to find another.

I own a GBD Seventy Six 133 and I just love it.

I’ll take this opportunity to comment on Cosmic’s question. — Yes. If it’s not a Classic, thin tapered Billiard — it will NOT interest me.

Super excited when I “won” this on EBay only to be told 1min later that “your bid was unsuccessful” with no explanation from the vendor or EBay ☹️

Always.
I'm always in the office at 6 in the morning, nice and quiet and I'm on my own.
SP & EBay, etc., looking for the one(s).
A few weeks ago, in fact a few months to more accurate (the pain of not getting it is still raw) I saw a pipe on SP, one I had been on the look out for. It was a Dunhill LB from, if memory serves, 1928 Bruyere, double March patents, for a little over USD600. As soon as I saw it, I should've snapped it up, but I was dicking around, checking things out, about to click buy, decided to make a coffee, got back to my computer....it was sold. I was sick. I couldn't believe it, even now I think of this one that got away.

So every morning, I'm still looking.
I have had a few recently, that I've been on the look out for, which is always nice. But there's the few which are still missing from my grasp.

Beautiful! Really like the lines on that bowl. Sorry to hear the bay took yet another victim. I've been after a similar shape. Its not really my style, but I can't stop thinking about it hah. I missed it on SP due to dragging my feet. Screenshot_20221218_193544_Chrome.jpg

My favorite personal pipe story....

In 1987 or '88 I visited a Tinder Box retailer in the Sarasota, Florida, shopping mall. When I said I was searching for a pipe, a bearded chap there reached up to their highest shelf and produced a green box. He opened it up and shared that Peterson, a well known Irish company (although completely unknown to me, in that pre-Internet age), had just released a new pipe called the Sherlock Holmes. The pipe I saw was awesome. Gleaming briar, glittering silver, and a rich, lustrous black stem. I was permitted to lift the pipe from the box and give it a heft. It snuggled into my hand as if it had been born there.

The price, at $100, was far too steep for my budget, so I reluctantly let the pipe go, watching as it was returned to its highest shelf. I bought a $9.95 basket pipe instead.

Years passed. I could not shake the feel of that pipe in my hand. Its perfect fit. Somehow the profile of the pipe was both thick and flattened so gripping it was like second nature. The perfect pipe ergonomics.

It wasn't until more than 10 years later that I had sufficient disposable income to begin a search for "my" pipe. I couldn't be sure which shape it was, however. At first I fixed on the Baskerville and promptly bought one. But the moment I took it from the box, I knew it wasn't right.

I gave up the pursuit for a while, although at some point I became obsessed by Irish Seconds, which I bought whenever they appeared (they used to be quite inexpensive) until I had accumulated a wide variety of shapes and finishes with the Irish Seconds stamp.

I can't forget the day I received an Irish Second I'd bought during that phase. As I took it from its box it fit instantly into my hand like an old friend. A little bit of research turned up the answer: the Original shape from the Sherlock Holmes series. Then it was just a matter of saving a few dollars and buying the first, good condition smooth that appeared.

Yes, I've been obsessed by this shape. But I now find that I don't really need more than one. In fact, I've long since sold off the Irish Seconds version. And it still fits my hand like a glove.

Thanks for reading my tale.

I want a Nording duck pipe but I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount for it (the only one on Ebay right now is $400+ and he is a liar when he says it's unsmoked).
