I used to have it set on any new estate Hilson listing, but then my email gets loaded down with all of those nasty Bakelite Fantasia pipes. The pipe does have a shape number, but back in the 70's they didn't stamp it. And, some people don't even list Hilsons as Hilsons, just "Belgian Made". So, I have to do two searches each morning.
Ah, gottcha. That does make it a bit harder. I will admit my knowledge of Hilson is non-existent, I've never handled or smoked one. FWIW you can set your saved searches to no emails, thats what I did because of my clogged inbox.

I have been thinking about this. I am not yet there on a specific pipe. I am closing in on several makers and shape families. Early in my pipe smoking, I just bought a bunch of pipes. As a result, I have some pipes I don’t really care for. I am thinning out. I think I will get to a focus on specific pipes. All part of what makes this hobby so fun and interesting!

Peterson’s are constantly listed incorrectly. A modern pipe is listed as Pre-Republic or worse.

The problem with saved searches is compounded by sellers who have zero clue what they’re selling.

Here’s a 1916 Barling Motordome. It was basically sold as a potato

It does take some experimentation to find your style of pipes. I was luck in finding that I loved dublin and bulldogs early on, but I have been varying outside of that lately with more billiards and some hybrids as well.

I do love that cap.

Yeh... On several scores, I have found that I find what I am looking for being sold by people also selling old knick-knacks... not just pipes. The only time I let the shape I am looking for slip was in a lot with Grabows and some other ugly dogs that I just didn't want to deal with... being sold by a non expert for way more than I wanted.

@cosmicfolklore I just went on Pipedia to give Hilson a quick look, bad idea... I found a unique shape that I really like 🤦‍♂️. I don't need another pipe to chase:ROFLMAO:, I think I'm just gonna ignore it and pretend I never saw it. The Hilson Birars with the Cataline godets are kinda cool though.
Hilsons tend to fly under radars, being Belgian... and they went out of businessin the 80's. A Texas Billionaire bought the name and still has some Hilsons made with the stampings, but they are no longer real Hilsons, now made in Holland. I call the ones I like BT (before Texan) ha ha. Although, Barbi did design some neat shapes for a few of their new lines. I still prefer the 60-70's designs.
They aren't collectible in a historical sense, but I just like those old designs. One in particular though is what I seek.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Except, I do feel a little compulsive, since it's the first thing I do when I pick up my phone in the morning. When I do see one, it feels like striking gold.

Here are some of my LPs from various countries of Elvis Costello's first album. I shared this in a music forum back in 2006 and it led to my helping with several of Elvis's CD reissues for Universal. Compulsive? I get it. Still fun.

I can understand the compulsive aspect of this. I find that I have a sufficient overage of pipes, from my perspective, that I can re-discover pipes I've neglected and this fills the bill for the something new I'd otherwise search for online. This is just a mind-game, but it works for me. Happy hunting, nonetheless.

I go through phases of makers/brands. I’ll buy a bunch of Chacom, sell them and then go to Peterson, sell them then go to Ropp etc. This gives me a good idea of each maker.

I started deep on Savinelli’s, then realized I do not like the Italian Acrylic stems. They are too big/clunky for me. Besides that, all makers are great. Rarely get consistantly bad pipes. I still do love my Savinelli’s, but would only purchase Vulcanite stems from them.

Grabows are still my favorite. Just can’t beat the value. I just purchased their POY this year. The Endurance.

If you like new Grabows, then you would love the new Kaywoodies.
