I am just wondering if anyone else is compulsively searching for one particular pipe shape, brand, or whatever.

There is one particular pipe shape made by Hilson. I have three already just like it that I smoke at least once a day. It was made in the late 70's... I'll save myself the grief of telling you which one, because I definitely don't want competition for it. But, I wake up every morning and login to eBay, switch my preferences to "worldwide" and search this brand for that one pipe shape that I want more of. I won't stop till I have 10 of them. I am already 3/10, but I have bought 5 over the years, with two of them being beyond repair or refurbishing. So, I am still hunting... Why 10? Lets say, I just really love this shape.

Anyways, I usually find one, usually from Greece or Germany, about once every couple of years. But, I still compulsively check eBay, Etsy, and the estates at SPc every morning.

Is anyone else hunting for a pipe or a repeat of a shape like this? Or, I am the only nutty one like this?

I’m actually on the lookout for a single, specific pipe.

I sold off a large (and heavy) Ben Wade straight-grain freehand sitter in 1988. Even though I sold it because it was far too heavy to clench and I needed the money at the time, there’s something about it that keeps me checking eBay to see if it’s come up.

I actually saw it once. But that was years ago, when I was merely curious and not actually interested in buying it back. And even now it would depend on the price, because it wasn’t a great-smoking pipe. But we do have history. (And it’s one of the few pipes I’ve sold that was unique enough for me to actually identify it by sight.)

There's a particular finish of very early KW I'm always seeking, they don't come up near as often as others and they're starting to bring more and more money. I've collected them for years, but they're starting to get cost prohibitive.
Yeh, I've bought the pipeshape that I am looking for at $20 and $120. Usually the cheaper ones are the ones I have gotten that need a whole new stem or have cracks. $120 makes me hesitate... but logically, I figure with as rare as it is, it is probably going to be worth it. The shape I am searching for isn't exactly a collectible by anyone but me, probably.

The brief answer is yes. I have done that off an on for a while. After looking this morning, I have come to the conclusion that the numerous pipes in my present harem of pipes are nicer and in better condition the almost any pipe on eBay right now. Not to sound sour, Its fun to look. But many of those pipes are just, meh.

When I pour over the listings, I see stupid bidding wars over mediocre, midgrade pipes. Sniping and inflated prices. Honestly, I dont care for that kind of buying environment. Though its fun to look and I'm sure there are good deals to be had. But, I think there are easier ways acquire good pipes. With my slow internet and my ebay naiveté, its not really for me. It's a bit like walking into a Casino expecting to strike it rich- a mugs game.

I much prefer horse trading with other collectors, buying at pipe shows, and hunting them in the wild.

No, as a new pipe smoker I usually don't know what kind of pipe I want or need. Usually I find out just before hitting the buy button.

Yes, there are several shapes/models that I can’t seem to resist because of the way they smoke, or I just enjoy getting variations on a theme (most often, different finishes—rustication, stain, colour).

I love the 320, 514, 660 shapes by Savinelli. I’m a sucker for pipes with metal rims—I’m still searching for Savinelli Panama 320 with a metal cap—the bulging curves and metal remind me of a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which has always appealed to me (maybe because of Get Smart?) I have several die cast scale models of the VW Ghia.

I love the Ghia's also. I bought my first wife one and restored it just before we divorced. That is the only thing about that whole era that I miss.

Half the reason for the compulsion is that the less common a thing is the greater the thrill of the chase.
I would never develop a fascination with 1.5" tall half bent billiards because that describes half of all pipes in existence, I collect Stack shaped pipes because they're rare, I'm pretty sure I don't even care how deep the bowl is but I definitely know that I do like smoking something rare.

I’m a bit obsessed with finding another GBD 9664 from the Seventy Six series which was introduced in 1976 in honor of the American Bi-Centennial.

I own one that I have smoked hard for a few years - the nomenclature is getting faint, the GBD rondel has fallen out and there is a spot of super glue on the shank but it is still my favorite pipe. I’ve got a couple of other 9664 but they are from different (lesser) series. My 76er was one of my first decent pipes - I had no idea at the time how much I would come to love it or how difficult it would be to find another.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Except, I do feel a little compulsive, since it's the first thing I do when I pick up my phone in the morning. When I do see one, it feels like striking gold.
Need to set yourself a saved search on eBay, that way eBay will notify you if one is listed. ;) I have a saved searches list about a mile long.

I mean, Sure that's pretty bad. But could be worse.

Like me, ever since I first discovered that i needed to be a pipe smoker (about 10 minutes before my first pipe order, yeah that's correct, I just knew...) I have spent 90 percent of my time these past ten years thinking about pipe and tobacco related things. It's Still exciting to me. Reading, Watching, Scrolling, Emailing, Forum..ing. Tamper making, attempts at making pipes, Squishing blends to make others, Changing my office to suit my small pipe cabinet. I have pictures downloaded on my phone and computer of old caked cracked dirty pipes, Drastically colored meerschaums, Etc Etc.

Many guys on here, are more simple, Just like to smoke. And i get that, but pipe smoking has basically consumed me completely. The first thing I thought of when I woke up this morning?

I used to have it set on any new estate Hilson listing, but then my email gets loaded down with all of those nasty Bakelite Fantasia pipes. The pipe does have a shape number, but back in the 70's they didn't stamp it. And, some people don't even list Hilsons as Hilsons, just "Belgian Made". So, I have to do two searches each morning.
