Are we really losing that much with the closures of Mac Baren and Sutliff?

It has been confirmed that Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake is the same thing. Sutliff was buying it from STG and selling it under a different name.

Edit: Didn't type this fast enough!
BUT... BUT... SUTLIFF PICKED ALL THE LIL PIECES OF PERIQUE OUT OF THEIRS!!! 😲😧😢 😂

What is recommended as a substitute for 507C Virginia Slices?
C&D Opening Night. Or MB VA flake, one of the few STG is retaining (allegedly), although I imagine its components will eventually be substituted/diluted as they see fit, just a question of when. Which is why I snagged an extra two pounds of it last month.

Also Newminster 400, while it's still around. Great deal too, just two Jacksons per lb. on SP. This one's a little different from the other two...wifey commented that the tin note smelled like "one of those vanilla scented candles you get at Bed Bath & Beyond." So take that for what it's worth! puffy

Nice I was wondering if the newminster was worth scooping since I already went in on a pound each of the 507c and PS luxury twist flake already. Good lookin out, brother 👍 :)

Newminster No. 400 was a great value, too bad.
Tell me about it! And during SP's Black Friday sitewide sale, that knocked an additional 10% off. A pound was actually flirting with--and I can't believe I'm even saying this number as we give Weimar Germany a run for it's money, no pun intended--30 BUCKS! Ah, the good old days of...a month and a half ago?

Suffice to say, my TAD budget for the past six months would give any financial planner an immediate aneurysm. 😵

Same. One of the old standbys of my grandpa and therefore one of the first blends that got me into the hobby. God, I can still taste that first bowl in my MM Washington cob... cutting grass on the lawn tractor....
Ahhh....
Anyway! Haha

Point being, I wouldn't count on anything from STG going forward. Did Half&Half and my favorite Lane blend (TK-6) make the original cut? Yup. But going forward they've stated that by 2028 they are looking to cut even further including skus already previously owned by them before this acquisition...
"Didn't I warn you not to trust ANYONE, Dr. Jones?..." 😂

PS... checkout CigarBid for the occasional stupid deal on stocking up on cans of Half and Half ;)
I too first smoked it in an MM though mine is a Country Gentleman

I' m a fan of 507c and Mac Baren's Navy Flake but nothing else stands out. What is troubling is that another blender/maker of pipe tobacco is going down. The reality is that pipe smoking is not what it used to be. Health regulations, over taxation and the stigma of being a smoker will ensure that our hobby will decline into oblivion eventually which means less companies will feel that it's profitable to offer pipe tobacco.

Wait is PS luxury twist in danger too?
From what I've been able to piece together Newminster is done. (Since it was basically intended to replace PS while it was out of the US market. So for while we've had both, with some unique blends and others that overlap.)

Now PS is supposedly made by STG in Denmark already so prob "safe" for now. But as was mentioned before, by 2028 STG wants to also cut out existing blends from their portfolio, even after gutting what they just acquired. So while the Peterson/Dunhill blends and PS is safe for now you may wake up one day a year or 3 from now and find that the Peterson line has gone from 24 blends to 4. Or the PS line from 18 to 3.

Basically anything STG is still up in the air. Heck, they may reevaluate that list they put out in 2027 and say "the profitability of capstan blue and st Bruno has fallen off lately, sorry"
If it's STG and you like it, get it while you can.

To be fair, this (profitability assessment) can happen to all blends by whatever manufacturer, right?
Otherwise they'll be losing money and risk going down as well.

Even though we hope blenders is doing stuff just to please us pipe smokers, I think that without profitability we will lose all blends in the end, Right?
I'm really sad over this Mac Baren/Sutliff ordeal, but I think it is unfair to blame STG only... Some blame should also be put on the previous Mac Baren owners, though MOST of the blame should be thrown hard at our regulating bodies; EU, US etc, governments, politicians.. the really evil taxating ones. Booh them.

(And no, this is not a political post. I just happened to mention some political institutes in a tobacco blame game)
