I salivate when I see a deer, because I see it as food. I treat it with respect, and I don't lord around pictures of it as a trophy, and I give thanks for it... but I don't see it the same way I see another human.

Everyone down here knows why we have high homicide rates in Birmingham. And, it is in Bham, not the entire state. It is because in the heat of the summer, people's trigger get snappy. If you looked at the numbers or where and when murders happen. It is in the peak off summer on the asphalt jungles of run down Bham. Hot ass day, some rich guy cuts you off in traffic, pow. And, that is a fact. This is discussed in the news every summer.
I agree 100%! Heat and humidity certainly bring out the worst in people...

This is something that weighs heavily on me as well. Your father sounds a lot like all of the members of my family that have gone to war. My grandfather was a WW2 vet, and he couldn't even stand to see us kids running around with toy guns.
My religious back ground has always made me question using a gun for self defense. I own guns, and at times when I have to transport large amounts of cash or jewelry, I do carry one. But, it has seriously weighed on my soul whether I wouldn't rather die knowing that I will enter God's kingdom untarnished, as opposed to killing and serving eternal damnation. Everyone has to make their own choices though. Dying, isn't the worst thing that could happen to me. And, getting robbed is preferable to either. How much money is eternity worth?

The ten commandments actually say not to murder. Killing in self defense or in the defense of others will not send you to eternal damnation.

stokesdale, I applaud your calm thinking in the situation and for your courage to act. You obviously know that while you may not face criminal charges for acting in the right situation, you will inevitably have to deal with civil litigation. I find that disgusting but it is what it is. I'm happy you didn't have to shoot the scumbag. though it sounds like he deserved it.

To be honest, it all came naturally; he had just slapped the woman to the ground and was yelling at her, I pulled out my flip phone (and yes, it was 2006 I think...flip phones were common) and called the police. Me and this other guy getting gas just looked at each other but it was obvious it wasn't any of our business and she was crying but okay and we knew the police would be there shortly so we just kept watching. It was when he reached into his car and got that club (more like a sawed off bat) that we both just said, 'hey wait man'...and we both drew our guns at the same time and walked over to him and once we both raised our aim, he dropped the club and just stood there until the police got there. They didn't even ask questions, we just both holstered up and left.

Yep, allowing ourselves, through inaction when able to take action, to get killed counts as self-murder, for which we'll face judgement more severe than 'murder' of others. Likewise, when an aggressor initiates violence and gets killed in the process by a defender, the onus of the sin is on the aggressor: the Heavenly Court will press charges against him for breaking the 5th through violent/murderous intent and provocation—and probably self-murder too, as his actions led to his own killing. The defender is not charged.

All policemen and soldiers would go to Hell otherwise, and I know of several fighting men who are now saints.

That's just not how my church sees it, but to each their own. I'm not going to debate this here.

I was told that by a couple of Christian Fundamentalist Pastors. I also understand some churches take a more Pacifist approach. I'm happy I've never had to kill someone and hope I never do. However, if I had to make a choice between them and myself or family/friends, I'm fairly confident of the choice I'd make. Again, I hope I'm never faced with that choice.

You obviously don't live in Chicago or California. LOL Getting in the middle of a domestic dispute is scary. More often than not, if you smack down the scumbag husband or boyfriend, the female will have recovered enough to attempt to claw your eyes out. Prime definition of a no win situation.

As for the initial topic: yes, do assess the situation critically and cautiously. I recently heard of a martial artist who defended a woman being attacked and beat the attacker up gloriously through his martial arts... 'cept that the attacker managed to get a few jabs of a knife into his abdomen in the thick of the fight and when the martial artist walked away victorious he took a few steps and passed out from blood loss.

He lived, but had to endure many months of special diet and post-operatory care due to a perforated stomach.

I go into burned out buildings that have sometimes been vacant for a while and homeless people have moved in. So, I enter buildings armed.

Chasing homeless people out of buildings used to be easy. I walk in, make an announcement, kinda like “don’t you know who I think I am?” That used to get folks scrambling and apologizing on their way out the exit.

That all changed about 2-3 years ago, and now the homeless/squatters are aggressive and non compliant.

I’ve been threatened with weapons (knives, bats, folding chairs and scrap lumber) and I’m always outnumbered. I’m one, homeless/squatters are many.

I’ve had to either brandish my firearm or hold people at gunpoint.

I don’t think I’m Lash LaRue or Hopalong Cassidy, I’m 57 and have so far avoided a prolonged gunfight, but I’m also not walking into a confrontation with a butter knife.

My handgun is a tool, just like my camera, my iPad and rakes and shovels.

But if it transitions there’s always my back up in my truck.......

I'm not a fisticuff sort of guy, never have been, that's why I carry a gun. I'm not that big of a guy. I always try to avoid getting myself in awkward situations and if I see a situation with me and someone else is getting awkward, I just walk away; my gun training has helped me keep a level head as well. I do and have often traveled through major cities and that's where I'm most wary about getting involved in anything unless I have a good idea of what's going on around me. That said, rule number one with carrying a weapon is to always let the police handle it...only draw your weapon if you see no other alternative.

I'll be honest with you, the homeless in Greensboro are quite aggressive . I don't live in Greensboro but I go there to Sam's Club often. More than once I would be in Sam's Club parking lot and have to lift my shirt to show that I had a gun to get them away from me, especially with a smaller guy like me. Meth and heroin are big around here and it makes them aggressive.

the number of times some would rack the slide while pointing it at the range shelter roof/cover is too numerous to mention..
SCARY! Haven't been to our range in a long long time, probably time for me to not send the dues in this spring--just don't use it anymore. Thanks for getting me thinking about all this plus the range dues thingy for me personally :)
kind regards

The Bible uses the Hebrew word for killing. There are no hairs to split. You kill your brother, for whatever reason, you suffer God’s judgement. The 6th Commandment and Jesus himself are clear on this. And the big man also says Vengeance is his alone. But of course this is only relevant if you are Christian.

We go to this range because it’s free, it’s run by the state game commission. If I had to pay I would just stay at home because we have targets here too.
