"I scorn tobacco if more than $100.00/500g "
I wish

In England the standard is about 185 usd /500g and I know we are not the worst in the world

You Americans dont know how lucky you are with your prices LOL

Pipestud and 4noggins seem to get a free pass from pipe smokers. $225.00 on 4 noggins for a bag of fresh Penzance (I bet you it's his own stock too) and nobody cares, but a tin of Christmas Cheer (out of production) goes for $100 on eBay and everyone goes nuts. I saw a 20 min ramble on YouTube by a guy who told everyone to stop buying Margate on eBay to help curb the gray market. When I told him 4noggins had Penzance for $225 a bag, he basically responded "The guys probably just trying to make some extra money." /Sigh

The distinction makes no sense unless it's the perception that as it's a business quoting these prices it's somehow more legitimate than someone posting a listing on eBay. The eBay seller somehow has more discretion in setting a price than a faceless consignor on a business site, therefore the eBay listing is more personal, and if that matters, more insulting. It's not logical, but since when has logic played much of a role?

whiteburleydude, I give everyone a free pass when it comes to selling tobacco. Ebayer, reditt's, pipestud, 4noggins, anyone and everyone gets a pass as this is America. We have a capitalist society where everyone has the right to buy low and sell high. If it offends certain people then they have the right to go to somewhere that is more in line with their sensibilities.

A lot of ebay sellers are businesses - it's not just for extra money, so for some flipping tobacco (or whatever other "collectibles") is just part of how they get by.

lazar, totally agree. There are tons of people who are paying their utility and food bills with the money they are making on ebay. Who are we to say they shouldn't be allowed to do that?

Well, you guys just knew that I'd chime in at some point, right?
I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never even gotten a free pass to the circus. In my world, whiteburleydude, I've had to work my arse' off to get every cent I've ever earned. Same for most of the guys here, I bet. But I will say this, my fellow pipe smokers are actually the people I work for. And they do make my work a real pleasure. I am blessed and admit it.

Steve, you sure do have a right to chime in and I know how hard you work to make your business the success that it is. No one sees what goes on behind the scenes. Sending invoices, packaging every pipe and tin so they are protected from the gorillas at USPS, answering email after email with plenty being stupid ass questions from guys like me. Dealing with consignees who all think their pipes and tobacco are made from solid gold. Lugging package after package to the post office day in and day out. Buying shipping supplies, tape, peanuts, and bubble wrap. All of these things take time and it would not surprise me if you worked a good 60 hours plus a week.

Well you guys on the another side of the big pond have terrible and inhumane issues. At least you have so much more to choose from comparing what we have here in Europe. I've thank God best tobacco shop in Europe where range of tobaccos is wide but not like you have in States. You get what I get plus all your "domestic" blenders like G.L Pease, Lane, Cornell@Diehl and so on. About these old tins if you want to pay so it's up to you, unfortunately it's not buyers market and in my experience sometimes woth it and sometis not,When it comes to Penzance I personally think the hype around this certain blend is not what this blend deserves. It's good though but not great. Smoking Red Rapparee which's good and solid smoke, easy to get, nothing to brag about. And the prize of tobacco has big difference, retailers in internet are so cheap. I don't want to offend you lot but when it comes to pipe smoking you live in dececnt society as I live semi-decent one and when it comes to brothers in Norway,Sweden and Finland those poor souls have even worse.

Not to worry...it will be equally indecent everywhere before much longer.

Pipestud... I didn't mean you get a free pass in life, just with marking up fresh tobacco. For the most part, you sell aged tins and those obviously demand more of a premium than fresh. Over the last couple weeks on these forums anybody who sells McClelland for profit was labeled as a heathen monster. I just wanted to explore the difference between your shop and personal eBay sellers and why one seems to be accepted and one demonized.

Just my opinion, but if somebody has a product they want to sell, whether they got it just before it was sold out, as in the case of McClelland, or if it is some other product that has been sitting around for several years, at whatever price they want to ask for it, then what business is it of anybody else's if they are not engaged in the transaction...

Frankly I don't get the outrage.. If I list aged $20 bills at $100 each and someone is stupid enough to buy them why does anyone else care?

There were a few of that opinion, but it seemed to me that the majority disagreed with them.

Another angle is not to blame the people selling, but too blame the people buying tobacco on eBay. There is an opinion out there that if people quit paying the inflated prices on eBay, sellers will quit selling, and there will be enough Stonehaven, Penzance and Margate for every man, woman and child on earth. This idea is nonsense. Nevertheless, I have heard people who believe this. Damn those internets, they are ruining everything.
