4Noggins doesn't list Penzanace or Stonehaven when it comes in. Either they notify you or you have to call and hope the timing is right. While I understand that it can be frustrating to many, taking care of your best customers makes good business sense. I have a couple of B&M's from which I can buy unobtainium because it's not, even remotely, the only tobacco that I buy from them. What they're not interested in are cherrypickers who only buy Esoterica and nothing else.

Received a Email alert from IR&C for Balkan Sobranie 3/17. Needed to follow the Email to Buy the 2 Tins. I also setup Alerts just in case as IR&C sent out to buy.

Exactly, why should a retailer not take care of the people who give them business month after month and year after year. People who only look to cherry pick them cannot realistically expect to be able to get the hard to gets when they come in.

Interesting comment, Pipesticks. I bought a lot from Rich over the years and never got the VIP treatment. Hmm....if that is true, maybe it's time for me to re-think things.
And yes, retailers are free to do as they please. As are the customers. I wonder at what set price a guy buys into the VIP tent. It'd be kinda nice if they made that known. ie VIP Pipe Club Discounts (and Cherry-picking) after spending $2k.
For me, I'll just buy what I want, at whatever the price is listed for.

That certainly is their prerogative if they choose to cherrypick their clientele. And I certainly understand that. But it also alienates others that aren't a part of the "good ole boy" network and feel they will never have even a shot at the unobtainium, thereby driving away customers. There's a lot to be said for retailers that treat everybody fairly on a first come first serve basis.

pipesticks,

And from what I hear, it's mostly overrated anyways. So why chase when there is plenty of good tobacco readily available with a few clicks...
In my opinion other than Stonehaven and Penzance, most of their blends are totally overrated. I happen to love Stonehaven and when I used to smoke English blends, I loved Penzance. Those 2 blends I believe carry the rest of their line up and are not worth chasing in my opinion. I have smoked practically every one of their offerings and only stock the Stonehaven in a large quantity. Their vapers Dorchester and Dunbar are two of the most overrated vapers I have smoked. I wouldn't cross the street to smoke those. I find that Curly Block, SG St James flake, Escudo, Deluxe Navy Rolls and Solani 633 are all much better vapers for my tastes.

I have to agree. I'm not a fan of the "good ol' boy" tactics.

Cigarmaster, I've tried all those vapors with the exception of Curly Block and have to agree those are outstanding blends and usually much more readily available.

I wish SG would get some shipments in....everybody is out right now. I don't think I've ever seen or even heard of Curly Block. Who makes that?
I figure some day I'll stumble on some Stonehaven or Penzance. Maybe a tin...or maybe somebody at the Chicago Pipe Show will turn me onto a bowl. Or maybe I can trade some of my now "dodo bird extinct" McClelland for twice as much Stonehaven :)
The Stonehaven sounds good to me, so that would be way ahead of Penzance. I've had the Penzance Killers...Star of the East, Quiet Nights and Plum Pudding, so I don't think I'm missing out on anything. But Stonehaven sounds really goood.

Found Curly Block. Yikes! $78 for 250g. No wonder I've never smoked it LOL

I've got a bunch of St James and Escudo cellared. And POUNDS of LBF (I love that stuff and smoke a bowlful daily), so I might take a pass on that Curly Block. I've been leaning more towards straight virginia flakes lately too.

I have no problem with a B&M giving their loyal customers dibs on the "good stuff". I don't have a decent B&M within 50 miles of my house so I do 98% of my purchases online. I get my tins and bulk for less than half the cost the B&M charges so I pay $100-$120 for a bag of Penzance or Stonehaven if I don't get lucky and find them online. I smoke less than a bag a year of each of them. It evens out in the end and I help keep the online guys in business.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. Another way of looking at it is that they take care of their regular customers. Rather than cutting B&M's throats by searching for the lowest online price and denying them regular income, create a relationship with your local B&M by being a regular customer. Successful businesses take care of their customers, especially their regular customers.
If online tobacco purchases ever get banned, B&M's are going to be more important.
As for Esoterica blends, they're not better than everything else. I like Stonehaven, but it's not nirvana, and it's temperamental. Penzance isn't for me, but I do like Dunbar, Dorchester, and Tilbury. Many of the other blends do nothing for me. But none of them are worth pining for. Their main allure seems to be their scarcity.

I spent most of my income for about 10 years on pipes, pipe tobacco, cigars, humidors, etc. I still spend too much but perhaps only 20% of what I used to spend. The tradeoff for becoming a cheap bastard is that I can pay my bills more easily and at times have a surplus, unless of course I give it to my daughter. . .I scorn tobacco if more than $100.00/500g and ridicule big time $175.00 Stonehaven; not those who purchase it; not my business.

Like I said, I get it with B&M's. I'm 36 blocks from IRC and they gave me preferential treatment this week on Gourmet English too. So, you understand my frustration that I will never get anywhere with 4noggins, right? I'm better off on SPC's Notify List. And at P&C.

Unless 4noggins offers what they have cheaper, which they did with HH last week, I have as much loyalty to them as they have to me.

Pipesticks, if you do try Curly Block be prepared to start ordering some ropes. The stuff is that good in my opinion and I have been cellaring it for a few weeks now. I wish they would let me order more than 2 as I certainly would, but I understand why they don't. I just ordered another rope today along with a couple of pipe stands.
I buy all my tobacco on line as the state of Florida are dick heads and tax pipe tobacco at 85% on the wholesale price. I built my relationship with 4noggins by giving them a good bit of my business over the years. I have no relationship with P&C and although I do a lot of business with smokingpipes, I have no relationship with them either. I have noticed though with SP and their notifications, I get them anytime I have signed up for them. I have no idea if they have some type of system that notifies people with certain badges first over people with no badges, but it would not surprise me if they did. It would make sense for them to do that.
If a new person signs up to be notified if say Samuel Gawith St James flake comes in stock, he might be at the back of the bus notification wise. I have heard of people who don't get notified when others have.

cigrmaster, I'm paying 28.5% tax for IL tobacco taxes and that pisses me off, so I don't do it often. I always buy something when I visit Iwan Ries, but I don't spend in there like I do online, obviously. There's no way I'd pay 85% either.
I have never smoked any Heinrichs. By rope, I assume you mean the Curly Block. I don't see any other Heinrich ropes. I've been tempted to try their dark fired. But it seems everybody compares the Heinrich offerings to Orlik's, so I haven't been very tempted.
I have started into the SG and G&H ropes though in the past few years.

pipesticks, the Curly Block is the only blend I smoke of the Heinrichs offerings. I am a fan of the Orlik Dark Strong so I don't bother with Heinrichs version. You need to treat yourself to a rope from Sp, at least you won't have to pay a tax.

twoonefive, I tried that blend years ago and found it to grassy for my tastes. It was similar to Orlik Golden which I only like with at least ten years of age. I find that to be grassy and hey like when fresh. I know people taste grass and hey with many of the light Virginia's but luckily I don't get those flavors.

Thanks for the recommendation though, but I am seriously all done trying any new tobacco. When I am done cellaring the Curly Block my TAD days are over.
