    English Fatigue?

I think there's a natural progression. Aromatics > English > Virginia > Burley > Codger. Some people save a lot of time and money and go straight to step 5.

    Carter Hall

Chiming in to say that I'm infatuated with Carter Hall. I have brushed up against this several times in my life in ways that have very nostalgic associations. Our bus driver, Mack, smoked CH - in that storied epoch when bus drivers could smoke a pipe while driving kids to school. He was a...

    HU Tobacco In The US?

Good opportunity to patronize your local tobacconist. I'm going by there today and touch base with him to see if he will be ordering, and throw my hat in the ring.

***What Are You Smoking, October 2024?***

My first bowl of a New Love - Carter Hall in my favorite pipe, a Peterson 53. I don't quite know what to say, I feel as if the scales have fallen from my eyes with Carter Hall. This stuff is lovely! I have pounds of other bulk blends that are no better than this, and they're harder to pack and...

Tobacco Choices in Lithuania. What do you Think?

Do try the Old Gowrie, it’s a masterpiece.

    Mild English Blends

I second the vote above for Stokkebye's Balkan Supreme - a deliciously balanced Balkan/English that I can't get enough of. Not a lat bomb, mild to medium in strength. Some places call it Stokkebye, some call it Arango, but it's Balkan Supreme none the less and it's fantastic.

What Pipe Brand Don’t You Own But Want To?

Cannon! In color! (A Quinn Martin production.) Pepperidge Farm remembers!

    Learned a Valuable Lesson Today

When it gurgles just tip it up and hold the mouthpiece against your pants leg. This is the main reason I wear pants now.

    Bulk or Tins?

I'm sort of a cheapskate about the things I lavish vast amounts of money on. There are so many outstanding bulks that I don't see the point of tins, personally. Some favorites (Drucquer's, some Rattray's etc.) only come in larger 200g "soup can" tins so I get those. But looking at a stack of...

What Pipe Brand Don’t You Own But Want To?

Tatsuo. I would gladly buy about 3/4 of everything I see that he has made. But they start at $400 and go up from there. Maybe once my cellar is where it needs to be I'll go there. Priorities.

    Medical News Update

Well, other than outlawing something, I don't know what else a free society can be expected to do to proscribe a behavior. Door to door police inspections are an option I suppose, but then we've left behind any semblance of a society we would recognize.

If they expect to grow pipe smoking, or anything else, then this is the demographic they have to appeal to.

    Medical News Update

I think they have? Isn't the legal drinking age 21 in most places in the US? And much of the concern about smoking is the enormous downstream health care costs associated with cigarette smoking - which are vast, vast nearly beyond comprehension. As America moves inexorably toward a single...

    Medical News Update

If you ain't buyin', you ain't tryin'. Stock up. Pounds and pounds. Look at the prices in Canada where a tin of tobacco can cost $75. I aim to build a cellar of about 2 - 3 pounds a year for all the years I can expect to have left which is probably 35 years.

Do You Have A Preferred Shape?

I am embarrasingly enamored of the Peterson 53, which is a Lovat. But the Pete is so light, and so perfectly proportioned, with a bowl of perfect width and depth. My other pipes are huddled together, grumbling, and playing with their switchblades hoping that my 53 will turn his back at just the...

    Latakia and English blends

I think an underappreciated English that is delicious and true to type, but not a real Lat bomb, is C&D's Awakened Elder. It's a really great all day English, and the best of that Lovecraft series in my opinion.
