    Re-lighting question

Dumping ash is OK. Do not worry about stirring and dumping your ash as you see fit. What has not been mentioned is that some tobacco requires more dumping than other tobaccos. For example, ribbon cut tobacco burns quicker than flake cut tobacco and therefore requires more dumping. I usually...

    Coffee & a Pipe

Peet's Major Dickinson whole bean coffee and either Gawith's Squadron Leader or McClellan's St. James Woods.

    H&H Balkan? Oriental?

For latakia blend I suggest McClelland's Blue Mountain. For an oriental forward blend I'd try either Gawiith's Squadron Leader or Dunhill's London Mixture.

Do Wider Bowls Give More "Flavor?"

I agree that Latakia blends smoke well in a wider bowl. However, my experience is that Virginias and vapers also smoke well in a wider bowl. For some reason pot shapes are not too popular. Some think that a wider bowl shape pipe distracts from their 'look' and others don't care how pots look...

    McClelland "Blue Mtn"

I have been occasionally smoking Blue Mountain for several years. I like this tobaccos rich flavor profile and while it has a high content of latakia it also has a deep fragrance that I associate with a full Balkan. I always considered McClelland's Blue Mountain to be kind of a 'sleeper' blend...

First Time Smoking Old Gowrie - Delightful!

I to like Old Gawrie. It has just right amount of sweetness and is low in vitamin N. Somewhere I heard that there is just a wee bit of perique in Old Gawrie. However, I like vapers and could not taste any perique. You may want to try McClelland's St. James Woods if you like sweet virginas...

    Peterson -vs- Savinelli

I have two old Savinelli Delux from the late 70's and a Punto Auro from the early 80's. I also recently bought I also recently bought a Savinelli Autograph as an estate sale. I own 8 Petersons. For my money I like Petersons since I have always received very consistent smokes out of these pipes...

Request For Help With Three Oaks Original

While I haven't smoked 3 Oaks Original one of my favorites is 3 Oaks Syrian. I the cut of the tobacco is the same between the two blends then I have had no issues keeping the tobacco burning. I always place all my opened tins in wide mouth Kerr or Ball jars and maybe with a little time the 3...

    What Lighter Do You Use?

Since I live just outside of Houston where it is very humid I use a Zippo pipe lighter. I have to smoke outside under the patio ceiling fan and I find that a Zippo will withstand the fan's breeze while a butane lighter will not.

    Drills Sizes, Request Tutorial

Rick Newcome in his book 'In Search of Pipe Dreams' devotes and entire chapter to the importance of drilling a pipe to increase the draw. Also, he has a drawing of a pipe with his recommended and specified modifications. This book is a must read for pipe smokers and even if you do not agree with...

What Pipe Would You Buy Again?

My favorite pipes are Rad Davis and Claudio Cavacchi. Peterson would be in third place because of equation of smokability vs. price.

    Has the Pot Shape Declined

I love pots because there is considerable briar around the pipe's bowl and pots usually smoke cooler than other shapes. Peterson shape 606 is a smaller pot shape which also has much briar around the bowl and is on the smaller size. I agree with those pot smokers that some do not like the looks...

    Squadron Leader

I am a big fan of Gawith's Squadron Leader. This is a Oriental tobacco forward blend and has no additives. What you think of as "perfume" is not any casing just Orientals, Virginia and Latakia. Dunhill's London Blend is also very good and similar to Squadron Leader. I have been drawn to Oriental...

    Seeking Help Choosing Next Virginia(s)

Virginias are very hard to obtain now. Some of my favorites are "Out of Stock" at this time. I would strongly suggest Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster as a special very flavorful Virginia that is a classic. Finally, McClelland's is known for their Virginias and I like Mature Virginia #27 the best.

Dunhill Royal Yacht - Have I got a bad tin?

I understand your comments about Royal Yacht. I smoke mostly Virginia and can not take Royal Yacht due its unique strong taste. I much prefer Dunhill Virginia Flake and when I want a oriental forward blend I always turn to Dunhills London Mixture or Gawith's Squadron Leader.

    Latakia Blend Recommendations

Try GLP Westminster, McCleland's 3 Oaks Syrian or Blue Mountain or if you like a oriental forward latakia blend Dunhill London Mixture or Gawith's Squadron Leader.
