  1. Wesley pipes

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

Also look at this! It’s a meerschaum lined bowl. I don’t really care for them but still kinda cool. This pipe keeps giving surprise.

Alanon. I was kinda hopping for your opinion on this, copper ring or not? I had to put the black one on to make the stem look better With being uneven and all, and was a bit smaller than expected but the copper ring might make it look a little silly. What’s your thoughts?

Well sorry to disappoint, but that handsome old prick is me, I’m old, just turned 68 but I feel 40 and handle like im a 30. There is a series’s of pictures my daughter did about 3 years ago, of me as being an old fu** smoking a pipe. she thinks they look better in black and white cuz of my beard.

Who’s that in the picture for your Avatar? Is that you? That’s a pretty sweet mustache!

Now for that kaywoodie. Let me start by saying “ I Was so sure That was a screw in stem“ something I was probably going to have to splice, or maybe sink the stinger in a new stem. I can do both of those but as I mostly use hand tools and would be using a standard drill for that… it would have...

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

It’s a cvs pharmacy brand of superglue I use, nothing special, just an extra thick superglue made specifically for wood. There are lots of different brands that make it. I usually mix it with ash or briar dust I collect from sanding.

For th there is a chance I will put a second ring on the shank closer to the bowl if i feel those cracks will continue to grow.

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

I have had really good luck using low viscosity cvs glue, briar dust and or ashes mixed together for small cracks. As long as it’s not around the part of the pipe that gets really hot, cuz thats a different process.

That was a mistake. If you look close, the first hole closer to the stem was not at the end of the crack. Probably would have bin good enough, but I want that fix to be as sold as possible, so it’s going to have an extra fill spot. my plan is to try to fill and blend that spot in until you can...

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

This is what we got so far with the Brewster. I used the torch to get the stem hot, then slowly twisted and worked it back and forth until it lined up. Hoping to get to that yellow bowl tomorrow.

    Why are estate pipes ok?

Agreed. Like anything people put in there mouths these days is much better than a vintage pipe.

    Why are estate pipes ok?

It’s your god given right to stick whatever you want in your mouth… respectfully.

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

Now I’m going to put some ash and superglue in that crack and the holes I drilled to stop the crack from spreading. As you can see it did get a little bigger. It’s going to leave a permanent scar on the briar, but after it’s all finished I think it will still look good. I used a pencil to point...

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

first I’m going to tightly wrap scotch tape around the shank to prevent the crack from getting any bigger. then I’m gonna wrap the bowl in a towel, gently put it in a “bench vice” and give it a couple “love taps” with a hammer. Wish me luck. 😬
  15. Wesley pipes

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

lets see about these 2. A yellow bowl “tweed” and an Italian Brewster. Both have stem issues. The yellow bowls stem is all chewed up and no longer lines up to the bowl to say the least, so I’m gonna replace that. If I dont have a replacement that fits then I’ll have to set the stinger in a new...

    Why are estate pipes ok?

I got me some sweet pipes over the years buying estates, but I do have a standard of how i clean them if I’m gonna stick it in my mouth, like I always say buy new stems in bulk! It’s a game changer.
  17. Wesley pipes

    Why are estate pipes ok?

Personally I if the stem is in excellent shape then I use Some very light sandpaper to remove any stains or tooth chatter and then sanitize them, oxyclean or rubbing alcohol works good, a lot of time I soak the stem in some bourbon whiskey to get the old vulcanite taste out. if the stem has a...

To restore or not to restore… that is the question.

At first I’m thinking 🤔 get all the pipes in this set new stems if needed and a rough cleaning and then go into more detail after I get them in smokable condition. I'm Hopefully going to do one or two post Everyday until this project is finished. thank you for checking it out Alanon!
