    Pipe Night in Akron 11/25

I’ve attended the last two and had a great time. I hope to make it this year.

    Brazilian Pipe Makers, Anyone?

I just picked up my second new Emiliano from MBSD, another bamboo billiard with ebonite stem. It’s 5.2 inches and weighs 26 grams. I love that style and the leather leather pipe bag is very cool.

    Vacuum packing tins

I just ordered a roll of Parafilm for my cellared tins. Thanks for the tip.

    Wind caps

I like to use wind caps, not only when smoking outside, but also when preloading my pipe so tobacco does not fall out as well as in my truck so that ash does not hit the seat or my clothing, I have found that the wind caps with the sharp, pointed closure pins grip well but can chip the rim of...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2025?***

My local pipe shop, Chesterton’s, has come out with 4 tinned house blends sourcing C&D tobacco’s and each is pretty darned tasty. Smoking their English in a smooth J Alan bamboo.

    Sara Eltang Pipes

With all due deference, I beg to differ. Never have so many different quality pipe blends been available, often at under $18 a tin. The pipe shows I regularly attend, Chicago and Columbus, are always sold out and packed with pipes from artisans across the globe and both just moved their shows to...

Art Deco Antique Hotel Lobby Ashtray

Nah, you turn it upside down. Nothing about pipe smoking is supposed to be easy. We leave that to the cigar smokers.

    Sara Eltang Pipes

Tom Eltang, pipe maker extraordinaire, started this line named after his daughter as a budget-friendly brand. I have a few, despite their acrylic and not the ebonite stems I prefer, and they smoke great. But, man is the price climbing from their original cost of just over $200.

Rockwell Drawing Featuring Pipe Smoker Outside Oval Office Set For Auction

This evening’s New York Times noted an auction estimate of $4-6 million dollars for a 4-panel set of Norman Rockwell drawings that once hung outside the Oval Office. They are owned by the family of FDR’s press secretary. The title is,” So You Want to See the President!” Note the ashtray stand, also.

    Why are estate pipes ok?

Later today, I plan to eat dinner at a restaurant. I expect that 100s of people have had the fork I am going to use in their mouths. As a society, we don't hesitate to use such utensils which are cleaned with soap and hot water. But it is a matter of personal preference, and while I prefer new...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

Loading up some Straus Sleepy Hollow in an Adam Davidson long stem squashed apple before a chilly walk outside. It is amazing to me how one year in the jar has smoothed and refined this iconic blend, and given it an almost savory taste.
