    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

I think about that a lot. On my end I don't know what the right answer is--but my opinion is that no one should leave college without a clear, marketable skill. Something you can instantly 'sell' to an employer--and I don't mean something vague like "critical thinking skills". Certification...

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

The IT guys here are making some compelling arguments. I'm still not planning on more formal education until next fall (when I have a bigger financial cushion), but there's no reason I can't have several irons in the fire. And I can start brushing up on computer literacy and learning coding...

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

Yeah, computers/IT have never really been my thing. My brother thinks I should learn SQL server code--he picked it up himself recently, and is doing very well out of it. I, on the other hand, can barely type! :nana: Another friend of mine got a job as a software engineer out of college at IBM...

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

Thanks Dave. The time off is definitely a a draw for me. I figure I either want to work as much as I do now (60-65 a week) and get paid a helluva lot more for it, or take home the same amount and work a helluva lot less. Either way, I'm decided. Did you go to school for what you're doing now?

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (December 2015)

December!? You must be on the East Coast. Nothing for me at the moment, as I'm off to bed.

    What Is Everyone Drinking Tonight?

Dog n Suds Drive-In style Root Beer. I have a taste for these smaller batch root beers. The new bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black sits unopened on the shelf, wondering when I'll take it out of the box. Not yet!

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

That's a good feeling. I have considered carpentry as well--in fact I'd almost call it plan B at this point. I was thinking maybe come spring I could get seasonal work in construction, see if I catch the bug.

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

Haha another great post, Warren, thank you. Some of that really 'hit home'. And you're right, of course. It's better to figure it out at 27 rather than not at all--ever since I decided to go back to school and quit wallowing I've felt better than I have in years. Thanks again, guys!

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

Brad brings up another great point. What is the future of welding? How much of it can/will be automated? How much of it will be obviated by new materials technology? But I figure even if I do choose welding now, it's not a life sentence. Maybe a few years' honest work at a good trade frees me...

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

@Warren, I think you nailed it. And Alaska tops the charts for welding work in the U.S. Financially? I'd like to pay my debt early, and buy a small house on a bit of land, all while saving for retirement. As a personal aside, that 'best friend' I mentioned earlier on took a degree in Criminal...

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

@mustang Exactly. And obviously I have no one but myself to blame for the choices I made--but I do wish that any one of the numerous people advising me at the time had cautioned me to be more...realistic. And I personally know a dozen or so folks with more or less the same story as mine. Wish I...

    Samuel Gawith FVF water content!

Ha! That was exactly what went through my head back when Peck first posted that. I wondered if I was the only one. I have no rational reason for feeling this way; I just do.

    Welders, Tradesmen--Career Advice?

Hey folks. Not sure where to begin, exactly--so I'll begin at the beginning. Skip to Bold for the short version. 8 years ago I graduated from high school. I did well on tests (got a 31 on the ACT, as an examlple), but as a scholar I was never better than middling. It was always a question of...

    Stupid Purchases, Non-Tobacco Related

4 years at college. Seemed like the path of least resistance at the time--but I didn't capitalize on it very well.

    The Zombie Apocalypse Continues

Well, sure, Warren--but I continue to be repulsed by even the less extreme behaviour; encroaching on one of our most important cultural Holidays to draw folks in the service industry away from their families to peddle slightly-less-than-usually marked-up Chinese goods to sleep-deprived and...

Winters here! So what's your favourite summer smoke?

A good Virginia and a tall glass of lemonade in the shade. I bought my first linen shirt this past summer--what a game changer! I miss summer.

    The Zombie Apocalypse Continues

There's an element of the McDonald's paradox here--everyone talks it down, and yet every year we're at it again. I worked at a Department store for two years, I had enough of their bullshit "SALE!!!"s to last me a lifetime.

    What are You Reading?

Last night I took possession of my old collection of books from my high school years, and into college. Weird feeling. Sort of a bizarre, scattershot portrait of my thoughts and interests at the time. Mostly histories and civics, and the requisite quota of "Western Canon" texts that everyone's...
