Smoking Earns Movies an R Rating?

It's worth noting that film ratings in the U.S. have nothing whatever to do with the government. The MPAA is a Hollywood Trade Association, and the "enforcers" are primarily theater associations, distributors, and other consumer-facing businesses. Businesses we can choose to support with our...

What Music Are You Listening To? - July 2017

Old Crow Medicine Show. If Darius Rucker hadn't covered Wagon Wheel, I wouldn't have found them. Also, Lord Huron. They did the soundtrack for A Walk in the Woods, with Robert Redford. A great movie, and a very good soundtrack! Edit; corrected film title.

What Books Are We All Reading?

About half way through Anabasis, by Xenophon. A Greek mercenary army of ten thousand men marches on Persia to help one brother overthrow another, in a bid to seize the throne. They have victory at the battle of Cunaxa (401 BC), but their Persian employer is killed in the fray. The book is about...

    Magazine Subscriptions?

The Economist, for a time. I was contemplating the Foreign Service Exam in those days, and that was one they recommended to read. Too time-consuming for a weekly, so I dropped it. I wish they'd stop calling.

What Do You Carry Your Matches In?

I used to use matches while camping, so I didn't have to worry about the Zippo running dry. Kept 'em in an altoids tin with the matchstrip taped to the inside (actually that's my fire kit). Then I realized I can just put a stick in the campfire and light my pipe off that. So now I don't use matches.

    Happy Birthday, Old Boy.

Thanks for the kind words. Orley, I can't read Thoreau without slowing down, and putting everything right back into perspective. As he says in Walden's conclusion, "I delight to come to my bearings." That's what happens when I read him, still ten years on. E.B. White wrote that he carried...

    Happy Birthday, Old Boy.

Hey, Henry. I know you probably don't think much of birthdays, but 200 years is...it's special. Significant, somehow. Of course it's easy when you're dead--but you just can't seem to die, can you? At the pond I'd guess they've come out in droves; reading from your books, looking into that...

    Hat Etiquette for Men

I know...I'm saying that it should be! Funny to hear a discussion about "Bad Manners!!!" at a forum dedicated to enjoying our age's greatest faux pas, isn't it? Perhaps when I stop wreathing myself in smoke I'll worry about the donning and doffing of strangers' hats. O tempora, o mores!

    Hat Etiquette for Men

Call me new-fashioned, but I don't see how "bad manners" enters into it. Is it bad manners for a woman not to wear a burqa? Does anyone have a reasonable grievance against the man who doesn't doff his hat? Is anyone legitimately inconvenienced by it, as they are in the wal-mart parking lot? I...

Smokingpipes. com Customer Service AJ Squared Away.

Very nice. One thing I've learned after 11 years in customer service at varying levels, is that it really comes down to the individual. Some of them are hardwired to go that extra inch, and some of them aren't.

    Pipe Socks?

I don't keep them. My pipes aren't an "investment" or a "collection", they're a long-term consumable. A slot on the rack is just fine. If I'm going somewhere, my Sorringowl pouch serves me well.

    Hat Etiquette for Men

Ha! Apparently I'm not the only one noticing hats today. I also observed a much older gentleman wearing a ball cap at the restaurant--wore it the entire time he ate. There's another one that comes around whose hat says "WWII Vet", with a big Trump pin on the side. Should I tell him to take it...

    What is a hipster?

Hipsters; the latest scapegoat. If we're not mocking their beards, dress, and equippage, we're blaming them for the downfall of Western civilization. -_-

    Hat Etiquette for Men

Very cool. I like the personal touch. I do a bit of leatherworking now and again, and I keep thinking that a leather brimmed hat should be on my list. Something like what you see here: http://www.rogue.co.za/hats.html My hiking hat right now is a stetson cotton duck bucket hat. But I only wear...

Had a Cutom Pipe Made, Not Happy With the Outcome, Thoughts?

Steve does mention grain in the article, Warren, but that's a very small part of a much broader thesis. The meat of it for me is here; That part I put in bold seems especially relevant here. Again, I do fault the carver. But the usual caveat emptor applies. None of this is helping...

Had a Cutom Pipe Made, Not Happy With the Outcome, Thoughts?

http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/the-gentleman-smoker/a-good-white-shirt-and-pipe-commissions/ There's a link to the article I mentioned. I should have provided that earlier. I offer it only as food for thought. Good luck!
