Was the stain getting in the chamber around the rim or seeping through the bowl? You will get an unusually porous block of briar from time to time that will wick the stain from the outside of the bowl into the tobacco chamber. It's one of the reasons briar is such a good vessel for tobacco...
McClelland's Royal Cajun Ebony in a Stanwell straight pot. Not a great combination. This tobacco does better in a narrower chamber. It's wonderful stuff in the right pipe though. Now I know. 8)
If anyone find's the McClelland "ketchup" smell off-putting and is looking to unload those terrible tins, PM me and I'll send you my address. I love me some McC's Va's. :D
I bought a MacQueen wizard back when I first started pipe smoking. The draw is almost too open for a stem that long and ends up feeling like you're sucking on a garden hose. Are you sure you're loosing air through the stem? If yours is anything like the one I used to have, it may just be the...
For me, it depends on the quality of the pipe and what I'm doing when smoking them. I clench a lot because I just don't usually have the time to sit and just smoke and relax. I'm usually smoking a pipe while doing something else that requires the use of my hands. I reserve lightweight mid to...
You can do it but you'll probably have an easier time with a rotary tool with various bits to do the carving. Briar is very hard and dense and isn't easy to shape with traditional carving chisels and tools.
The winners were: Rad Davis, Brad Pohlman, Steve Liskey, Joe Nelson, Tonni Neilson, Thomas James Richards, and Chris Morgan.
Congrats fellas! Now if we could just see pics.
I know what addiction is. I smoked cigarettes for 12 years starting when I was 16. I remember the times I would try to quit and the cravings being so strong I would smoke my roommates cigarette butts out of an ashtray. I kicked that habit 15 years ago. I truly enjoy smoking a pipe but have...
So how did all you dad's spend your Father's Day?
My wife and kids got me a new hammock and stand so I put it up and tried it out. I poured me a glass of JD single barrel, loaded my Karsten Tarp with McClelland's Royal Cajun Ebony, and watched Thor on my Kindle Fire. It was as grand as it looks:
Yup, looks pretty normal to me too. It appears that the owner only smoked the first half or so of the bowl pretty regularly which would account for the thicker cake at the top of the chamber.
I use a drywall screw also. It grabs nicely but doesn't expand the tenon and make it more tight. The freezer idea is a good one. I haven't tried that in the past. I haven't had to but it's a good safety measure anyway. Good luck and sorry you got the shaft.
