    Smoking Prohibited at County Fair

I live in a very rural, farming county. This year, they prohibited smoking on the fair grounds. I was really disappointed because I had to spend a good deal of time there with my daughter and her 4H livestock. I was so looking forward to relaxing just outside the barn with a pipe and cool...

New Or Estate? Which Do You Prefer?

I prefer new but started out with a lot of estates to get a good rotation going. I've since sold off most of my estates and replaced them with newer pipes as I can afford them. That being said, I do have a few estates that I will likely never sell.

List Your Other Hobbies / Interests

My number one hobby aside from pipe smoking and collecting is pipemaking. I also raise chickens, hike/backpack, play guitar, and scuba dive among other things.

    This heat sucks

You won't hear me complain about the heat but the drought is something altogether different. Here in Indiana, we haven't seen rain at my house since May. I'm afraid it's too late for the crops. Stock up on beef while it's still affordable folks.

    Lathe Tips

I turn tenons on my wood lathe but only because I don't have a metal lathe. A metal lathe is way superior for this task. That being said, there are a few tricks that will make turning tenons on a wood lathe a bit easier. I prefer to approach the rod stock from the end as if I was turning a...

    Bowl Seasoning... help!

I'm one of those guys who just put's whatever tobacco I plan on smoking in a new pipe and smoke it. I don't do anything special. No partial bowl, no special cleanings, no nothin'. I've not had any problems. I just like to relax.

    Whats Going On With TV?

"The Walking Dead" on AMC is about the only thing worth watching these days (although the comic book is better.) I don't watch much TV anymore either.

10 Aeros and non Aeros youd recommend

My two favorite aromatics are Reiner's Professional and Dan Tobacco's DaVinci. They're the only two I keep a supply on hand. As for non-aro's, I like Va's, VaPer's, and either of those with Oriental's included. Here are some of my favorite non-aro's: 1) Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls 2)...

    If you started with aromatics...

My first tobacco was an aromatic called Ginger Snap from my local tobacconist. Bit like a rabid dog. Next I tried Peterson's University Flake and didn't care for it much. Next was Captain Black's Cherry and I took a few puffs then threw the pouch away. Then it was Frog Morton. First bowl...

    Al Pascia

It's my favorite site for high end pipes. The shipping is fair for international. I got hit with the $25 customs fee twice but the prices seem about that much less than what you would pay for the pipes in the US. The site has a wonderful selection of non-US artisan pipes.

    Stain In The Bowl

Oh yeah. If you go the powdered alcohol based stains you'll want to mix them in denatured alcohol.

    Looking for the Perfect Pipe

For an English blend and your first time smoking I would pick up a group 3 or 4 sized pot, author, apple, bulldog, or rhodesian with around a 11/16" x 1 1/4" deep tobacco chamber. Latakia blends tend to tire your palate quickly when you're new to them (and even when your not) so a wider...

    Stain In The Bowl

A lot of pipe makers use Fiebings leather dyes which are alcohol based. I prefer J.E. Mosier's powdered dyes that you mix yourself. You can get them in water, alcohol, and oil based at www.woodworkersupply.com.
